American Birkie 2018

Who skied it? Any good stories? What a wonderful day to ski. Temps, trail and scenery were all spectacular. I did the Classic race and I had perfect kick all race. Multiple layers of Swix VR40 (blue fluoro) were a tad slow on my warm up, so I added a thin layer of old Swix VF20 (green fluoro, simila...

Swix Klister Brush?

Just stumbled across this product. Swix KP10. A Klister BRUSH set. Apparently you apply the Klister, heat with a heat gun then spread/paint the Klister on with the brush. Never heard of such a thing. Anyone have any experience with it? http://www.swixsport.com/Products/Wax-Tuning/Tuning-Equipment/Co...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

Some hope... The latest snow models predict significant snow for Birkieland somewhere around the Friday-Saturday timeframe. This is accumulated snow totals as of 6am Saturday morning (25 Feb.) Looks like 6" minimum. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f23/vasa58/09F53BB5-E99C-4510-BE88-32FD3B46EF...

Re: Is the cheap RaceWax fluor powder any good?

I tried them and the main problem is application. They don't melt/burn with an iron like the big brands do. I've corked them in but it still doesn't feel like it adheres to the base.

Re: Birkie 2015

I broke a rib during the City of Lakes Loppet and haven't skied since. :? Hoping to ski easy this weekend and be near 100% for the Birkie. Somehow I'm still in the Elite Classic wave after a crummy 2014 race.

Re: City of Lakes Loppet - 2015

Skied the classic race on Saturday. Pretty fun - the course was excellent and clean on the first lap and then, as expected, was worse after every lap. The short, steep, herring bone hills after the tubing hill climb were loose sugar but it really wasn't that bad. I have a feeling the skate race will...

Re: City of Lakes Loppet - 2015

I was wondering about what skis to use too as I've never done a pure double pole race. I always thought the pros used skate gear, but watching the Marcialonga this weekend (all double pole), it seemed most, but not all, the top skiers were using classic boots and skis. I can see the classic boots - ...

City of Lakes Loppet - 2015

The snow cover stinks. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are all looking to be near 40F too. :-(

Wonder what they're gonna do? I'd prefer to ski some big lake loops and finish at the new finish area, vs. lapping Theodore Wirth endlessly like a few years ago.

Re: Binder for Kick Wax

There are special base binders such as Swix VG35, but most companies make their own too. It's a special type of hard wax. Not sure how to describe the texture, but it's not normal hard wax. Less "waxy" and more sticky/tar-like. You will iron it in after crayoning it on. Ironing it in gives...

Re: Would simple metrics reveal why US places where it does?

I believe in the theory that the best youth male athletes in the US get diverted into other, more popular sports at a young age. Basketball, American football, baseball, hockey, track/field, etc. If you're a good enough natural athlete to win world cups, you probably were the star of the baseball te...

The British Euro Sport announcers were even talking about Kowalczyk snow plowing. They showed a video of her snowplowing and someone blowing past her. They suggested she get some lessons from Bode Miller :-)

Re: Homemade Hot Box?

I tested out some waxes in the Hot Box today. Holmenkol Alpha Mix Yellow from BNS. They say they use it when they hot box. Also tried the Fast Wax Hot Box specific wax. They claim it "stays liquid in the Hot Box at 130° F or 55° C". I had it at 130F for 2 hours and it certainly never got l...

Re: wax pocket position and technique

I'm no expert but I've used the wear on the front and back of the wax as my guide. I intentionally wax long (front and back) then go ski. If the wax pocket is too long, the wax will have severely worn off the leading and trailing edges of the wax. Some wear is normal though and I'd say my current po...
