Re: Ultimate gear geekness: skis for beach skating

I've not skied in a while (no snow, no budget) but the virus is working me again. Still need to man up and take to the (busy) beach with skis. In any weather it's just crowded here. New (older) evidence has emerged! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT9c8Uy8-1g" onclick="window.open(this.href);return ...

Re: More stable skate ski.

From the very first evolution, I've been amazed every time I demo'ed Fischer Carbonlites. It seems like novice me can make endless long glide on them. One time, I was cornering on just one ski, because I could. Somehow I could not do a thing wrong. Try to demo a few pairs of modern carbon skis. IMO,...

Soft snow baskets for Oneway Diamond Premio Storm

Even before I start using these, I know I'll get in trouble on anything but the firmest of snow. I've stuck my poles through a foot of snow at times, and nothing in life is as aggravating. Who can tip me the best soft snow baskets that I'll somehow be able to stick on these? Hard to even get info wh...

Re: Exel Curve poles

From an engineering perspective, I have not been able to find a good reason for the Excel design. If I wanted the handle at an angle I would have just extended the straight shaft further and put in one bend instead of two. As an amateur engineer (with a hand in a bunch of sports item patents) I see...

Re: Exel Curve poles

Could it be like an ice hockey slap shot? Compression which doesn't drive the pole in deeper, but returns energy later in the pole contact phase? On the Leki site I do see the grip pointing at a spot 25-35cm behind the basket. Angle. If you draw from the basket out, obviously the grip is pretty much...

Re: Exel Curve poles

Disclaimer: i sell another brand of poles.... i tried them out in West Yellowstone. They don't seem stiff when you are not moving and just applying force to the pole. They feel very stiff while skiing, not sure what that means? The swing weight felt heavy and I think this is because when you use a ...

I've been wanting poles grips that point inward for a more natural wrist angle. This seems to be meant differently, but I'm confused.

Re: Dang, Northug busted bigtime...

Cloxxki: It wasn't quite as bad as that, actually. Right after the crash he checked that the passenger (his buddy) was OK. His buddy then urged him to get away and blame him. Heroic but dumb... The cops quickly found out what really happened, of course. The reason for the jail sentence was that he ...

Re: Dang, Northug busted bigtime...

So, did he get to serve any days yet? Or wll he do so at his optimal convenience? According to TV commentators, Northug didn't just wreck a car while driving drunk. He also left his passenger for dead in the wreckage, went home and to bed. Police paid him a visit and he repeatedly denied involvement...

Re: Is a narrow race ski always fastest in soft snow?

Of soft ice, too narrow speed skates are slow. Same should go for skis. Narrow skis are more like to press through a layer of snow, and end up compressing a larger volume of snow, wasting greater energy. When a skis doesn't sink in deep, a wider one IMO will be slower in a glide test. It might not b...

Re: Longer skis faster?

I am well over 200lb now, and stuck with skis shorter than myself. If women are on staking skis about 20cm taller than themselves, why should I be on 192's? My pressure per square inch is fully DOUBLE that of Johaug. We would almost be side-to side on a swift downhill, but if there is a path of soft...

Re: Free skate technique still evolving?

I don't watch much biathlon, so can't comment on that. Kikkan has been doing this more than her competitors for more than just this year from what I can tell. My assumption is people have been doing this more to try and mimic her success in skate sprints. It does seem more people are doing this now...

Free skate technique still evolving?

We all know that free skate (not using the poles) is a way to add to momentum at speeds where it's too fast for the poles to do any useful input. Over the past years, I've seen an increase in race finishes, in biathlon, XC sprint and XC distance, where especially winners are no-poling to the line. F...

Re: skate tech help please

My tracks of course also curve out. IMU it's a fable that there is full outward pash in the beginning of a track. And certainly not on a true outer edge. We need the ski to cant in before any real pressure can be applied. Of course the cant itself is gradual, so pressure/force can be also. When you ...
