Home test for skate ski flex?

I just got a pair of 192cm Fischer RCS skate skis. They seem like fairly recent skis. Maybe mid-2000's. Is there a ballpark test I can do at home to determine if their flex is close for me? I have no idea who these secondhand skis were picked for. They have Pilot bindings. I might try to find a seco...

Re: Drills?

the technique work I like costs $350 but i still like it. i bought a pair of Cat Skis. dryland classic training skis. kinda like rollerskis for trails or grass. ...they re-teach me good kick every autumn. they're the opposite of the bad kick that regular classic rollerskis tend to train. you can't o...

walking sole accessory for ski boot?

walking sole accessory for ski boot? Alpina Skin / RD ... hmmm the graphics maybe should be read as Skinord. https://www.flickr.com/photos/skinord/31690576462/in/photostream/ I see a pic of what looks like an add-on walking or running sole for a ski boot. I've often thought it would be neat to merge...

is "basic" 2-screw NNN binding goofy?

I bought a Whitewoods "basic" nnn model of binding. When I got it I see that the front of the binding is only held on by 2 screws. no front-center screw. It has a squishy rubbery release button. it kind of seems FLIMSY. ...any report on how well these work or hold up?

What makes skis faster? ...Narrowness or Length?

...And why?

It does seem like skis get faster as they get longer. ...Is this due to lower pressure?

It also seems like they get faster as they get narrower. ...Is this due to increased pressure?

Whew.

Re: Herringbone Skate

I've posted here before, and also posted a video to YT, showing how I can do a gliding herringbone without using any edge. It is easy and it helps me lower the slope angle to get better grip. ...But it's an illegal move. The limiter isn't if you are edging. In classic skiing you are only allowed to ...

Forcing flex into skate boots for striding?

Has anyone abused their old skate boots into becoming decent for striding? Skate soles are stiff -- but what if they are forcibly bent over and over again? Will they break or get flexy? I'm looking at buying some old worn skate boots for a kids program and am wondering if the kids will be able to st...

Re: Combi vs Classic Boot

I find that diff combi boots are designed w diff ratios. Some are more like a skate boot and much less nice for classic skiing. It also depends on if you do real classic skiing -- it seems that some boots are designed, well, for doublepole racing. I suppose these would be the boots designed more for...

Re: BACKWARDS hairies?

i haven't gotten the nerve or the chance yet. we lost our snow. i was wondering if anyone else had tried it. or if it's known to be good in certain times. Peter Hale mentioned a case location but didn't give particulars. well, i'll try it when we get more snow then report back. ...i need better wide...

BACKWARDS hairies?

Anyone hear of this? I'm tempted to try it since my regular direction wasn't working so hot the last time. Google Peter Hale's advice on hairies. He says some conditions want sanding from tail to tip. ?

Re: Transition to No-snow: Nordic skating!

When thin near shore I find a log to go out on. Or I just get tricky and look carefully for a way. There's always a way. Yeah, skis carry me better than skates do! (Did that last week.) Often the thinness can be stepped across. Or there is a gap where water has come down near the shore so you step o...

YOKO Optigrip -- interesting take on hairies!

I didn't know Yoko made skis! http://yoko.fi/materials-and-rd/yoko-optigrip/ Looks like they're saying the WHOLE base is used for grip on the 2.0 model. The 2.1 has glidewaxable tips and tails. I wonder what the real scoop is. I also see mention of a "rubbery" section -- like other hairy c...

Re: Those in-between months..

i recall lifevest in some pics. i wear one sometimes. poles can function as the safety spikes each waterway can have unique aspects that create variations in thickness -- flow, springs, rotting vegetation. but 4" of fresh ice is considered reliable. use an ice-spud to test or look for bubbles u...

Re: Transition to No-snow: Nordic skating!

the level of risk is up to you. i push the limits in terms of getting wet because i've already experienced a wide range of ice situations and I do take precautions and also i don't mind getting wet but i also skate in shallow waters. be sure to know the basics of ice safety -- which incl such things...

Transition to No-snow: Nordic skating!

We lost our snow in the past week. Had a couple 40-50deg days with freezing nights. Still, our pond ice held up. So I transitioned to Nordic Skating. That was fun. We have some wandering, remote wetlands that have the actual BEST wilderness feel in the region. And give about two miles of wandering, ...
