Re: physics of skiing ...compare skate to classic

Gorf: "...assumed a skate ski is faster because skating doesn't require any kick wax and you can glide during the whole stride." Yeah, that's right. But it seems like the key difference during each whole stride is that in skating the ski is moving forward during the kick while in classic t...

Re: NNN binding bad for classic even w soft/no bumper?

i assume they are skate specific bindings. i'm just going to remove them. their range of motion seems limited even w/o any bumpers and they injure my toes. i'll save them to install on some skate skis someday.

Re: classic faster than skate for some climbing?

i classicked yesterday w two intermediate skaters. they would gain on me on the flats and downs and i would catch and pass them on every climb! i don't think their V1 was very efficient. later on i went out skating. i've only skated a couple times this season and I noticed how much feel and techniqu...

physics of skiing ...compare skate to classic

thinking about the physics of skiing... I've often thought that the main reason why skating is faster than classic is that during the kick in skating the ski is moving, altho at an angle. so there's a gain because it's gliding. and a loss because there's some vector to the side. there's a summing tr...

Re: Fun w new skis!

Whew. I just started another thread about these. But here's an update for this thread. I just skied an hour w these classic skis without any bumpers and one of my toes was injured afterward. Apparently the pivot is coming up shorter than with any other binding I've ever used -- never had toes get hu...

NNN binding bad for classic even w soft/no bumper?

Sorry for starting a new thread, but i wanted a better subjectline. So I picked up a pair of used Rossi classic skis that have racy looking NNN bindings. I skied them once and my toes hurt. The flexor seemed to be doing it. So I removed all the bumpers. That seemed to help a bit on a test outing but...

steep waddle-oriented last stage?

Do they ever do it classic?

Is the waddle look good for the sport?

Not that a final mile of herringbone would be great either

possibly a lesser grade of steepness?

last stage gaps in TdS?

I don't know about those gaps in the last stage. Just because someone has so much time ahead of everyone else doesn't mean the last stage should end up boring. There were a couple clusters of people which created some interest further back in the field

classic faster than skate for some climbing?

Is there any chance that at a certain degree of steepness that classic is faster than skating? The V1 waddle seems inefficient at some point while classic still can give forward Glide at the point of steepness before herringbone is required

ah ha ha! in mid michigan we got a few inches in november and since then only two 1/2" snowfalls -- both of which I skied hard on!

'all skis are rock skis and all snow is good snow.'

today i got a good outing on an EIGHTH INCH!!! :)

Advantage of longer Nordic Ice Skate?

Yeah, ice skating isn't skiing, but in this case it's nordic. ...and when we don't have snow, they're kind of similar. I see that the skates vary in range from 15" to about 21". The ones I have are like 17". I'm wondering if 21" would have some noticeable benefits for typical use...

Re: help -- how does biathlon get a pursuit aspect?

i thot pursuit developed as a way to make it easier to have a combi event. for awhile didn't they do it without stopping? they'd do, like, a classic race then switch gear to skating at halfway point. so the formal pursuit measures the gaps at the halfway then restarts with those gaps so they don't h...

Video of Petter intimidating rivals and 'pre-sprinting'?

as we say goodbye to the Wolf, I recall a favorite race video where he catches the two lead guys a few km from the finish. i must've been a relay. or maybe a pursuit. when he caught them i recall they looked visibly nervous and deflated. then he skis w them awhile. then a quarter mile from the finis...

help -- how does biathlon get a pursuit aspect?

i see the only youtube videos of the latest hochfilsen biathlon world cup have the racers starting based on some kind of unexplained handicap. ... how was this derived? why does J. Boe get a head start? the only time in modern skiing that this happens is in the pursuit -- when the race result of one...
