Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

Ugh, they only needed a couple of inches to put on a quality event. Taking a drive around the north end of the Birkie trail showed a base remaining. What an unfortunate busted forecast.

Sounds like fun skiing a 5K loop tomorrow and a party. See you there!

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

It is a Worldloppet event that gets people from around the globe. To those people, they made it clear several days ago that the usual race wasn't happening. But by far most registrations are from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Of 10,000 participants, only a few hundred are really racing. The show will go ...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

I'm not sure what it is you don't understand. They have been very transparent. It all hinges on snowfall Friday. If they had to make a call based on what's on the trail now, it would be no ski race. There are three options on the table depending on what happens. If you want a traditional Birkie, tha...

Re: Book Across The Bay - Ashland WI Ever done it?

That was certainly the most "interesting" conditions I've ever skied in. I learned that a combination of deep water & slush with glare ice underneath is surprisingly skiable in a worst case scenario. They recommended walking, which I was set to do with boots and yak tracks. At the last...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

A base (with puddles) is still holding north of OO! https://www.facebook.com/AmericanBirkebeiner/videos/10154404322246173/?pnref=story "2.22.17 (10:00am) – Trail & Event Update: Here is the latest update from Birkieland. Right now, it is above freezing in the area. There are some puddles on...

I'm not sure what it means that the gate across the trail at OO is gone this morning. Meanwhile, the start area has really deteriorated.

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

The timing of this storm sucks. If it was today, it would be perfect. I appreciate the efforts by the Birkie crew. The fact is that they can't make a call today. You can't take a forecasted snowfall for granted, especially with how inaccurate snow forecasts have been this winter. That said, it appea...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

The cams look terrible. They really looked okay this morning before the rain. Still a lot of rain coming. Without substantial snow on Friday, there's no way they can hold it I presume. I think they should go for the Hail Mary Pass - postpone the Birkie and Korte to Sunday. If enough snowfall arrives...

Re: Book Across The Bay - Ashland WI Ever done it?

I've done it for many years and will be there tonight, no matter what the conditions are it's always a good time! Check the videos they are posting on their facebook page - it's still holding now but there's 8 hours of sun to go.

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

Entire Birkie trail closing tonight to protect base. Stay off! Things I'm hearing: still working on full course. Efforts focused on South end of trail. They have moved more snow into some spots around Mosquito Brook, etc. The narrow fish hatchery section is being bypassed and food station moved back...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

The trail is currently in great shape with plenty of snow. No problems with the trail or lake for the weekend's events. However, the forecast is very unfavorable. I consider a full race with a main street finish unlikely, due to the forecast. Sure hope I'm wrong.

Re: 2016 Birkie

I'm not liking the forecast at all. What a shame, why can't the liquid precipitation and warmth wait until Sunday? But I guess it wouldn't be the Birkie without some nervousness about the weather. The book about the first ten years of the Birkie alludes to this back then, also. It's been several yea...

As per Boulder Nordic, it's a final polish of the wax job for very cold conditions. I thought the rule was -20 C or -4 F. Off, Jay Background 387.1.1 There are three main factors to be considered by the Jury regarding cold weather safety: the temperature; the duration of the exposure; and, the clot...

Re: Birkie 2015

We are very lucky. They would have had to cancel or significantly postpone the race today. FIS criteria does not allow a race to be held below -25 C, which is -13 Fahrenheit!!
