Re: the most difficult technique? ...herringbone!

Without watching you it is difficult to say what you can do to improve. A couple of things do pop into mind. First, remember to keep looking up the hill. As soon as you look down the hips tend to drop back from a more forward position. This makes it more difficult to get the foot underneath your cen...

Re: anyone believe this market study says US biggest?

I can't say what happens in other parts of the country, but here in the Tahoe area one of the biggest advertisers for XC skiing is the price of tickets at the Alpine areas. Even at $35 for a trail pass, it is substantially less than the $150+ that people pay for Alpine skiing. At the area I teach, m...

Re: What made you start XC skiing?

I originally started backcountry skiing as a way to make my backpacking season a year round activity. When just out of college a friend suggested I try a XC ski race because he knew I was a runner. I went to the race, missed the wax by a mile, bonked after 5K in a 20 K race, and managed a DNF at the...

Re: Anyone skied yet?

California had a good storm late last week. We have great skiing in the North Tahoe / Truckee area. Tahoe Donner, Royal Gorge and Tahoe Cross Country are all open. Farther South Bear Valley Cross Country is open. Kirkwood and Tamarack open this weekend. I've skied the last 6 days. The past 4 have be...

Re: Flying to the Birkie

Thanks Montana, you pretty much confirmed what I am planning. I would imagine wax removers, aerosol klister, and spray flouros might not be acceptable. Hard kick and glide waxes are probably OK. Then I can plan on purchasing what I need to fill in the gaps when I am there. I've never done the Birkie...

Flying to the Birkie

I've signed up for the Birkie this season. 55K of classic. Can't wait. Since I'll be flying from California to Wisc. I have resigned myself to the idea of paying the extra baggage fees for skis and poles. What about flying with all my waxes and magic juices and powders to make my classic skis ...

Ashland, OR

I will be going to Ashland, OR next weekend. Does any one know of a local roller ski road. Good asphalt and low traffic would be nice.
