Sierra BC conditions

If anyone has skied in the High Sierras above 8,000 feet within the past week, what were the snow conditions? The CA water resources page reports ~2 feet of snow on the ground at various stations, but I am wondering how much variance there is from spot to spot.

Going there this weekend.

Re: regenerative brakes on rollerskis

The problem, apparently, was solved by this company, scheduled to start selling their rollerskis this summer

regenerative brakes on rollerskis

Has anyone tried using a small electric motor coupled to the front wheel, and a resistor array+heat sink as brakes for rollerskis, skates, or bicycles? All friction-based brakes generate too much heat, are heavy, and are cumbersome to activate. In contrast, with regenerative braking the small motor ...

Re: Walking or jogging with ski shoes on ?

just strap your skis to a backpack (A-shape) and ride your bike to the trail. No gizmos necessary. There is a picture of Bill Koch floating on the net doing just that. I've done it couple of times when it snowed on Mt Hamilton in the Bay area, so I rode my bike 10 miles up the mountain to ski on the...

Re: Summary of this winter for various regions?

Mid-Atlantic was amazing. Here in Northern VA I was able to ski from my home 4-5 times which is quite rare.

California (the Sierras) really bad, they got their major snow storm in early Feb (as can be seen from snow depth graphs on the CA water resources).

Re: First-time ski racing question

Just do it. I finished last on my first ski marathon, many lessons learned. And since you have been doing running races, you clearly have the motor part taken care of, should be where you belong among the top guys in no time.

Re: rollerskiing treadmills

JT: I contacted the Thorax maker. The cost is $2,500-$3500, depending on configuration. On the costly side, but not too bad. I have the Concept 2 ski machine which was about $800. It's really boring pulling down on the ropes -- you feel like a dork. Not sure if I would feel less like a dork on the T...

When looking at the Thorax Trainer thing on youtube, there was a link to this gizmo as well.

Re: Skiing in decline?

I 'grew' into backcountry skiing after retiring from racing. It's a whole different experience, more like meditation.

Re: rollerskiing treadmills

I got myself a pair of Swix rubber tips and tested them on a Woodway running treadmill. I stood in front of the treadmill that was running, and 'poked' the belt with the poles at an angle close to that of 'release phase' of double poling. It felt like the grip should be sufficient. So, double-poling...

Re: Skiing in decline?

sure, snowmobiles can be quite useful. I meant that I would not mind seeing snowmobiling (and any non-self-propelled form of 'sport') to decline as a form of recreation. But, hey, I burn gasoline while trying to get to skiing , so I am aware that I am a hypocrite.

Re: Good at striding, terrible at skating

Skiing without poles is a good suggestion. Focus on the glide and on the complete weight transfer from leg to leg. Try to skate on the "outer edge" of the gliding ski for as long as you can. Practice in the summer by speed skating, ice skating, and even (oh, no!) rollerskiing. Finally, rec...
