Re: Birkie Backup Plan --GBC or Pepsi Challenge

Thanks for posting the elevation profile. I see what your saying about wanting something for lap 2. I too am experiencing an odd funk from the melt down and losing the Birkie. Running instead of skiing has a way of making me feel like ive lost all my fitness in a 10 day period. I am just going to ha...

Birkie Backup Plan --GBC or Pepsi Challenge

I am currently slotted as a wave 5 birkie skate skier. I put in my first real season of training this year and stood a great chance to move up in the waves quite a bit. I had a decent 26k Pre Birkie which I now regret not doing the 42k in order to have a qualifying time to move up. My thought is to ...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

I live 15 minutes south of OO with about an inch of new fluffy snow on the ground. It looks as though OO has not received any bit of what are getting a little further south. This storm tracked too far south from the looks of it. Hoping I am wrong.

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

This event cost a million dollars to put on. I doubt the races that cancel early have even half that expense so you may have to forgive them for not just cancelling. The Birkie is doing everything they can to give the majority of their paying customers an event. In my opinion I am glad they are push...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

At the moment there is a large tent set up next to the Korte start area. Base looks skiable. Think late spring skiing base/boilerplate. I saw one pisten bully out next to the oo trailhead also a snowmobile implement. Beodecker Rd crossing looked pretty good. I have pictures I will try to upload but ...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

Last ABSF Facebook video said less then 1% chance of a race from start to OO.

What's sad is the timing of this warm up and inch of rain. The trail will most likely be skiable for another month in a week.

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

It's raining nice and steady up here. The Birkie cams are back up and not very promising.

What a bummer.

Would the Pepsi challenge survive for next week?

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

Please send help. I went for a jog today to the sounds of constant dripping and watching water flood down the sides of ditches. I thought the trail could handle the 40 degree days but multiple days touching 60 is unbelievable. I went for a drive to check out what I could see at the southern trailhea...

Re: Book Across The Bay - Ashland WI Ever done it?

What a night. Our group of 3 skiers heading up from Hayward in the early afternoon. We all wondering what to make of the book Across the bay after seeing a Facebook update showing a race surface of standing water and slush. We all decided to head up and check it out at least for the band a craft bee...

Book Across The Bay - Ashland WI Ever done it?

I have done the book Across the bay a couple times, it's a pretty relaxed 10k with one small hill ( a speed bump of snow on the lake) . There are some pretty good skiers that show up on the front row but mostly just cruisers and walkers beyond that. They throw a pretty good after party with a huge t...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

I wonder what the ABSF has for a contigency plan. I certainly wouldn't want to be the one calling the shots on it all. Trucking in snow perhaps? A shortened race? I have to believe the north end could survive. But as Ben said the south end by fish hatchery is in trouble.

Re: Cold feet fix?

I had problems with my feet getting cold early this year. The solution boiled down to fit for me. I wear a boot that cannot fit a thicker sock in it without becoming kind of tight. I switched to a thinner nordic smart wool sock and keep my laces tied snug but not too tight. Turns out I was unknowing...
