Re: good hand angle (pronation)

Staffenstaven pole handles made a huge difference for me. Even more was not gripping the poles with my hands, and letting the straps do the work. My understanding is that if your muscles are under tension from squeezing the handle, it is a lot harder on the joints.

Re: Rollerski Double Pole

I do this all the time. Works fine for me! And you can skate if you need a break from DP.

Re: Tracking Issue on Jenex RC150

Sorry, what I meant is that moving the bindings back 3” might cause bigger problems than having the back wheel dropping a little.

Re: Tracking Issue on Jenex RC150

Loosen front and rear axles, clamp both wheels between two straight boards, then tighten axles and wheels will be parallel = go straight. As for balance point, you push off from ball of foot in center of ski, so the binding pivot point will always be a few inches ahead of that. Meaning back half wil...

Re: Measuring skier watts?

DCPattie,

That is an impressive effort, how old are you and what is your weight? If I can put out 200 watts for one minute repeats I am happy. I'm 54 and 75k.

Re: How's the season going?

Aligning skis is easy and cheap. Just loosen the bolts in both the front and back axles, clamp the two wheels in between two straight boards (ensuring the wheels are forced to be parallel and in alignment) then tighten the axles while the wheels are clamped. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.

Re: Double Poling Question

Pat, my understanding is that double polling is not comparable to running; you want a quick strong impulse from the core and then get as much recovery time as you can (i.e. slower tempo is better).

Re: Jenex brakes eating my shoes

I find Jenex speed reducers work very well but they will only fit on Jenex roller skis.

Re: Training philosophy

Rowing vs Skiing ... there is little penalty for extra mass when you are rowing, yes? That's why they are so much bigger. If you had to row up hills, your ideal body type would be quite different. Running/Roller Skiing vs Biking ... my understanding is that as running and roller skiing are weight be...

Re: Triceps Injury

Dave, sorry to hear your injury is still there. Maybe get into some skating too (not just classic) so you can go no poles now and then? I am no expert but if you have good handles and straps, you should never have to grip the handles too much as the force is being transmitted through the straps, not...

Re: Those in-between months..

Still in between roller ski and regular ski season here ... what do you all think is the best gym workout to keep fit for skate skiing? I am fortunate to have a ski erg (for upper body) and combined with a Stairmaster at the local gym seems like I have all the bases covered. Any other ideas?

Re: Triceps Injury

Dave,

I am not a medical person but it sounds like you are describing a tendon issue; not a muscle issue. I did some online research on elbows and the best article I could come up with is here:

Lots of helpful stuff.

Re: Triceps Injury

Interesting Youtube explaining why it might not be beneficial to slam the poles down at the beginning of a double pole .... most of the propulsive force comes in the middle of the push; not the beginning.

Re: Triceps Injury

Just did some reading on tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and it sounds like it is important to relax the hand at the end of each poling motion. Apparently if your muscles/tendons are always engaged gripping the pole it is a lot harder on the tendons of the elbow.

Re: Triceps Injury

skiffrace, you may be right that a more gentle pole plant would help; but I am trying to duplicate skiing as closely as possible. I am relatively new to skiing and with 8 months available to roller ski and 4 (at best) to ski I want to do everything I can roller skiing to reinforce the correct habits...
