Re: Winter season 18/19

Almost had a massive crash today when I couldn't brake between the tracks as it was messed up from the slushy weekend outing and frozen solid in big bumps (from people walking with shoes etc), so just had to follow the icy tracks down the steep and twisty road and hope for the best. :? The track was...

Good one. Ski orienteering is surely exactly what Jeff was looking for.

Re: Winter season 18/19

Even more snow! 30-40 cm in a few days made today's outing one of the best of the whole season. Silky smooth as it was on a hard and prepped icy base. Of course this is the last throes of winter as April is around the corner and forecast is for above freezing from now on, but what a nice surprise. S...

Re: the latest in cold prevention?

I will try good old-fashioned brandy from now instead, see how that works. Knock on wood, but can report this has worked well. Both me and the wife have staved off what felt like something brewing on several occasions. I guess doctors in the old days having a flask of brandy in their bag was for a ...

Re: Too old to start skating?

When I was skating, I thought classic skiers should be tolerant to me gliding over their tracks when both styles were allowed there, but now that I'm classic only I much dislike skaters messing up my tracks..

Re: World Cup 2018/2019

A surprising fade by Niskanen, but they said he had very bad skis this time. Top four spots to Russians has to hurt Norwegian pride I would think. Johaug should reclaim some of that tomorrow. Jeff Yeah Johaug winning a hilly mass start race is probably the surest bet in sports right now, but a Russi...

Re: World Cup 2018/2019

Got to hand it to Alexander Bolshunov who today became the youngest Holmenkollen 50 km winner at only 22, and has already gotten Olympic and World Championship medals. He completed all races in the recent World Champs which is quite a feat in itself, and now he's leading the World Cup as well. Unlik...

Re: US Biathlon Article in Seattle Times

Yeah that was confusing, but pretty sure the structure is set by stone grinding. Glide is so important. Norwegian athletes will actually say that the skis did the race for them and you can see the difference in some races is large. The US team really had things on a roll there with Lowell Bailey sea...

Re: how sweet is carbon?

The carbon part of skate boots is rock solid. The alternative plastic is almost a joke the way they flex. And the stiffness really helps, especially for beginners.

Re: Winter season 18/19

Tracks were melting and it looked like the end of the season, but then it bucketed down and now it's full winter again with top tracks, so nice. Tomorrow is the start of Holmenkollen World Cup race and before my run I stood by the track and could see all the stars practicing, real close up. Bolshuno...

Re: Doping scandal in World Championships Seefeld

Seems they all have the same coach, Estonian Matti Alaver. He used to be coach of Estonian Andrus Veerpalu (Olympic gold medalist, 6 World Cup wins) who was caught doping. (I was always suspicious of him, suddenly finding form for big events) Veerpalu's son Andreas is one of the Estonians caught now...

Not sure, didn't hear of anything. Maybe the courses are set good enough. Looks like it.

Doping scandal in World Championships Seefeld

The merited Aleksej Poltoranin from Kazakhstan (2 WC medals and 3 World Cup wins) has been arrested together with the 2 Austrians Dominik Baldauf and Max Hauke and some athletes from Estonia. They have all admitted to doping and one was unbelievably caught in the act. Supposedly there is a doping la...
