Re: Are "no DP" zones really affecting races?

No DP zones are typically only used in courses where FIS thinks it is probable that someone will DP and this is actually only a minority of the races on the WC calendar. There are issues with the zones, for example in Drammen where the zone is in a area where skiers with wax would prefer to DP as we...

Re: Are "no DP" zones really affecting races?

The sprint in Drammen used to be DP'ed by some of the skiers, for example Northug who won in 2016. In 2017 they implemented no DP zones in Drammen, and as far as I know, no one has DP'ed afterwards. So yes, it clearly can affect races. It really depends on the course and distance, but generally the ...

Re: Carbon boot weight?

If you are thinking about the Alpina ECL summer, they are around 295g for a size 42. A hypothetical Gignoux classic boot would probably be a fair bit lighter. Making a lightweight bike shoe is a simpler engineering challenge since the sole should be as stiff as possible. Designing a classic boot whi...

Re: Do we still need tracks?

So you are saying that because you don't feel like you need tracks, tracks are useless? What about kids and beginners? Why were skis invented? I can walk on my feet just fine. If you are really wondering, tracks were originally a thing because it was more efficient to ski after each other. Now we ha...

Re: Ptex -- tough vs waxable?

Thanks again, very good read. That temperature range is very conveniently the range where the lowest friction coefficient typically can be seen. The biggest expected advantage for a PTFE base would surely be in higher temperatures with thicker lubrication film. Surface roughness is very into Kuzmin ...

Re: Ptex -- tough vs waxable?

Hi! Yeah I figured it was enough with a mention. His name tends to open a completely different discussion (which I enjoy very much, but for the sake of the topic). Kuzmin did prove that there were no pores to absorb wax, but I don't think this means that all UHMWPE bonds to wax in the same way so I ...

Re: Ptex -- tough vs waxable?

I think you are looking for any sintered UHMWPE base (as P-Tex), all variations inside this category should be extremely minor compared to other parameters. All sintered UHMWPE bases have great toughness and waxability and of course there are tradeoffs. I agree that most evolution (if any) will happ...

Re: Skin skis general discussion

Okay, hard to draw any conclusions without from the picture it looks like Fischer Twin Skin Pro, Rossignol R-skin sport, a Salomon model and a Madshus model. The Madshus model probably being Terrasonic or maybe even Ultrasonic? So low end-ish. Maybe the Fischers are good, but they are not cheaper th...

Re: Skin skis general discussion

Could you post a summary of that test? For us without access. I mostly skate so I'm not that good a judging classic skis, but I've skied a few models. Did a lot of last year on R-skins which I have swapped for a pair of R-skin Race this year. Also had a pair of Atomic Redster Skintec and I've tried ...
