Re: Bad to change screw-bindings on race skis?

I'm thinking of buying some 5/10 yr old skating and classic Fischer race skis. They have Pilots installed. I'd want to remove those and install NNN instead. Is this a bad idea? Are new(ish) skis too fragile? ! Several years ago I was gifted a pair of Fischer skatecuts from a friend of mine. As they...

Re: More stable skate ski.

Thank you for that info jt10000!! I guess I should of taken advantage of a local demo day a few weeks ago at Craftsbury, VT. I probably weigh more than 215 after I get all suited up so I would imagine I would need a very stiff ski. I will try to find another demo day or rent a pair of skis soon. I ...

Re: Back to the sport after a 25 year absence - holy crap!

DG, Don't overthink it--it sounds like you're focusing more on the fitness and fun aspects, and based on your description, you have put together a system that will work well for your needs. Keep it simple, keep it fun. As far as the last part of your question goes I think the general consensus on &q...

Re: Used Atomic WC Skate, need advice

The skis are are 190 length, so I believe that is the correct size for me. Im 165 lbs. What Im not sure of is the flex rating of the ski ( soft medium hard ). What identifying marks will be on the ski to tell me the flex rating. I havent seen the skis yet. Should see them this weekend You may want ...

Re: Heavy Guy

I am about 230 and am looking for used XC skis. Is there a general rule of thumb about what lengths ski the best weights? What are my best options in a used ski? I don't plan on skating this year but does weight play the same with skate skis? Thanks. Nick Generally, at your weight, you're going to ...

Re: bicycle commute helps/hurts training

My commute is about 40 minutes of bicycling, mostly L1, with touches of L2 when I stick-it-out in a lower gear for a brief climb. It's not a long-enough duration to be a normal L1 "long slow" session. I've tried stretching it past an hour, by running before the commute, and taking longer ...

Re: I'm not sure I like Nordic Racing

Having been in road races (running), I have a good grasp of the general etiquette, particularly with self-seeding. Sorting things out while running seems relatively easy to me. I feel the stakes are higher in a Nordic ski race. There's the part of me that wants to get a decent start, yet I wouldn't...

Re: I'm not sure I like Nordic Racing

I did a small race recently. There were about 30 entrants. It was my first. I was not entirely familiar with the course. I 'm fit, but I started in the back because I didn't want to get in anyone's way. Of course, I got stuck behind skiers who were much less fit than I. The course started on a long...

Re: Skate ski newbie... choosing between Zymax and Intrasoni

Both Rossi and Madshus make decent skis. Go with whichever ski is the best fit for your weight and needs (the ski shop can help you with this). I'll underscore what steener says about the boots--try them both and go with whichever one fits best. Good fitting and comfortable boots are key to you bein...

People on FB post fantastic stories from Slate.com all the time. They sure have the news scoop on everyone else. Is that really a reputable news source? First Birkie--the view from wave 8. Prelim Stuff: Drove up with a friend of mine (also a first time Birkie skier) on Friday afternoon. While the roads were icy and snow packed, traffic moved ok as long as you kept your speed in check. The drive from the Cities to Hayward was 4-ish hours, not bad ove...

Re: Tar kick products

A couple of notes on the Rex Tar: 1. The "Universal Tar" that you're seeing in the wax recs is the same stuff as the "Rex 60" --the anniversary wax that Rex had out last year. 2. Rex 60 (the anniversary wax) has a printed range of -2 to -8 C (28F to 17F) where it works very well,...
