I think classic XC skiing is just the easiest, fastest, and possibly cheapest way to travel hiking paths in deep snow. When I lived near the Adirondacks we'd rent XC skis and take regular hiking trails. 20 miles would be pretty hard to walk but was a fun day on XC skis. As for being a lot of work it...
