Re: Winter season 18/19

This ski season has been good, with 390cm total snowfall to date, with about 90cm on the ground in the woods. I've been skiing since late October and enjoying the moderate El Nino temperatures - up until now. Enter the Polar Vortex. Now it is too cold, snowy, and windy to enjoy skiing! I even skippe...

Re: World's most eager skier?

Nice video. Where I live the limiting factor for the ski season is relatively low elevation. Lake Superior provides somewhat of a buffer against warming trends, and usually ample lake effect snowfall, 767cm (302") this season. Crust skiing is highly dependent on freeze thaw cycles and every year is ...

Re: World's most eager skier?

That's impressive, but why do you prefer track skis over terrain skis? Better for skating? Yes, I like the combination of lightness, speed, and ability to skate whenever possible. The modern gear provides very good control on downhills and the stiffer skating bindings minimize heel movement when sk...

Re: World's most eager skier?

I am also an avid backcountry skier, but I mainly use skating gear because I like the control on the big hills that I like to ski. I use whatever technique is needed for the terrain but prefer skating where possible. Having previously skied in every month except August (June and July in Alaska), I d...

Re: Anyone rollerskiing yet?

Still skiing this morning from Delaware up Gratiot Mtn. and down to Eagle Harbor. A little dangerous out there today with falling ice from trees. My only regrets today were not wearing a helmet and not using faster skis (better rock skis).

Re: Anyone rollerskiing yet?

I would say the snowfall in my local area has been pretty average this season, but now probably a little above the average of 150-250" (381-635cm) depending on elevation. Since I moved to Michigan in 1979, I have been able to ski for 4-7 months a year, the earliest on Sept. 26 and the latest May 26....

Re: Anyone rollerskiing yet?

I live on Lac La Belle, an inland lake connected to Lake Superior by canal on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan, US. Photo shows view from my back yard taken at 3PM this afternoon (4-28-17). Today I skied up on the North side of the hill shown in the photo (Mount Bohemia). The other photo is ...

Re: Anyone rollerskiing yet?

Freezing rain, sleet, and snow made for really good skating in open areas today. Skiing in the trees was tedious and treacherous though. Lots of down trees, power outages, and nasty driving today. Luckily, I only had to drive a few miles to ski today. Still waiting for spring. Yes, shoveling snow ca...

Re: Anyone rollerskiing yet?

Photos from skiing April 23. 2017. Today I stayed inside all day doing chores and some indoor weights and stretching as it is in the 30's F and raining all day. From November 19th through April 24 (Monday), I have skied on snow 142 out of 157 days totaling 44...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

I think events like the Birkie and the Noque have gotten too big to fail, and now have enough peripheral activities to insure that they won't. From a ski racing standpoint either the race is on or it isn't. Races at all levels can be cancelled for various reasons all the time. No big deal. The hugen...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

It looks like a probable 6" Friday, but maybe a foot or a little more. Will that be enough to cover a marginal, nonexistent, or water covered base? Can it be groomed firm enough quickly enough to hold up to thousands of skiers? I don't have the answers, but when they say a 1% chance of an actual rac...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

The cams are back up and running. The start area is starting to look slushy. I hope they make an honest assessment and call by tomorrow evening, and not try to force everyone to show up to see if the race is going to somehow happen. I don't want to go there just to party, but those that do will make...
