Re: Question about older Fischer S-Bounds, negative pattern

I've got a pair of outtabounds with the negative base.

Compared to the positive base on my BC125s, sure they don't climb as well- but I feel the difference is relatively minor.

The upside is, skins stick to the negative base better and skins for that size ski are dirt cheap.

Re: Body armor, injury protection for skiers?

When doing this kind of single track skiing, the thing that's going to get me isn't impact injuries, but some kind of muscle pull or strain from getting all crossed up or landing funny in weird terrain. Regular weight lifting helps prevent a lot of this, and greatly increases recovery time if it doe...

Re: michigan trails

what i don't know is how michigan balances the demand for snow with snowmobilers- if they share, or are the trails seperate? Can only speak for the UP, but- "Official" trails are very much separate. As for unofficial trails, well- there's more than enough snow and terrain available that w...

Re: Classic skiing without tracks -- seems like a handy skil

You got a bit o' unitrail going there! : ) When I break trail I like to keep my feet apart a bit. They tend to get close together so it takes a bit o' effort to keep 'em nice. If you ever want to ski that track again it's then a big pain if tracks are too narrowset. Keep in mind, that track is abou...

Tracks are only for those untrained in the fine art of breaking trail.

Re: Pants

Perfect North, isn't that downhill? If so, you may have the wrong forum. Nonetheless- the best ski pants I have ever purchased (for XC, or downhill, or both) are from Wintergreen: http://www.wintergreennorthernwear.com/Men-s-Pants/984-680XX-Boundary-Waters-Shell-Pants.html Those and a wool base laye...

Re: Get Shorty

See my post in "ski choice for a big guy"- I'm definitely a fan of the BC125. Everyone I know got the 175s last year, so no experience with the 165 stiff. Your boot setup might be a little light though- especially for turns. Although the BCX 675 is probably my favorite in that class of boo...

Very cool to see more of this style racing. Also, dates have been set for the Copper Harbor Backcountry Snow Race: http://www.copperharbortrails.org/event/2012-02-25/352 Not sure exactly what they have planned for this year, but it typically works like this: Race anything you want, as long as it's h...

Re: michigan trails

Houghton. You got Chassell, Swedetown, MTU, Churning Rapids, and Massto Hitto all right by. You're also easily within striking distance of all the Marquette trails along with everything out near the porkies and ARB. Even northern WI could be a reasonable day trip. Also a good place to spend a month....

Re: Backcountry Ski Choice for a Big Guy....

As a fellow big guy, I've yet to really find the upper practical limit for size on skis used outside of tracks. I tour primarily for turns, but need to cover a lot of ungroomed ground and snowmobile trails to do so. Started out with Fischer Inbound Crowns... a little too wimpy for turns.... Skied Fi...

Also, It's unfair that some people have more time to train than me. And it's also unfair that some people have a better VO2 max than me. And it's also unfair that some people can afford better equipment than me. As my father is fond of saying, "Life's unfair." It's a good lesson to be lear...

Well, not exactly close by- but I stumbled upon these guys while down in Grayling last week: http://xcskishop.com/.

Cool folks and a well stocked store.
