20 Jan 2019

Today I skied at Stowe Mountain Resort (formerly, and still, known as "Mansfield"), Trapp's, and a small section of the Stowe Recreation Path ("Rec Path"). Conditions were good for backcountry skiing, due to the snowstorm that started late last night and continued through the aft...

18 Jan 2019

Skied at Trapp's today. Conditions generally very good at all elevations. All trails open. Morrison Corner, usually the last trail to open, did not have any trail anomalies, but was somewhat more scraped down than, say, Chris's Run.

Craftsbury, January 12-13

I skied at Craftsbury the last couple of days. Conditions consistently very good. All trails open, including both lakes. (Looking at their Web site, a couple of trails at Highland Lodge are closed, but I'm talking about the Craftsbury side of things.)

Miscellaneous skis, boots at L.L. Bean

The L.L. Bean outlet store in Concord, New Hampshire has about a dozen or so pairs of skis, on sale for 50% off list price. They also have some NNN and NNN-BC boots. I got a pair of "L.L. Bean Heritage Edition Adventure 62" (which I think are basically just "Fischer Adventure 62"...

A little more snow last night and today, and the rough/thin/icy spots were gone today.

5 Jan 2019

I skied today at Trapp's. A modest snowfall (3-5 inches) a few days ago allowed an impressive recovery from the rain last Saturday. Conditions today were generally good, somewhat better with elevation, but with (easily avoidable) rough/thin/icy spots even on some higher elevation trails. The only tr...

Christmas 2018

On December 24 I read the ski conditions on the Web and decided to try snowshoes. The conditions on the snowshoe trails were much worse than on the ski trails. So, on December 25 I tried again with backcountry skis. I can report that it was certainly possible to ski, if you really wanted to, and if ...

19 Dec 2018

I skied today at Trapps. Conditions were good to very good, from lower to higher elevation. It looked to me more like 1 inch rather than 3, but it was enough. Just a handful of easily avoidable icy spots. Morrison Corner trail and lower Haul Road remain closed. This was my first time using waxable s...

17 Dec 2018

I skied today at Trapp's. Conditions varied as the afternoon went on and a little bit of snow (or some kind of precipitation that aspired to be snow) fell. Earlier, I'd describe the conditions as fair. Later, good. I was surprised that conditions were at all skiable after last Saturday's rain, but, ...

Pellet stoves

How do Norwegians feel about pellet stoves? (And, yes, I realize that it is ridiculous to generalize about millions of people, not all of whom conform to stereotypes.) Do they respect the labor-saving engineering that allows one to have a fire in one's living room with a minimum of effort and skill?...

Warming huts with fireplaces

My local ski area has a warming hut with a fireplace. Today, the employee who ordinarily tends the fire (and cooks soup and makes sandwiches at the little snack bar) was not there, for some reason. But another skier had stopped at the warming hut before me, and he had started a fire in the fireplace...

7 Dec 2018

I skied at Trapp's today. Conditions were fair to good, which is a typical thing you might expect me to say this time of year. But usually the differentiator is elevation. Today it was the tracks that had the worse conditions, pretty much irrespective of elevation. There has only been a little snow ...

30 Nov 2018

Today I skied at Trapps. Conditions were generally good. Almost all trails were open, the main exceptions being the Haul Road below the Oslo trail and the Morrison Corner trail. Tuesday's snow was a little on the wet side, but it groomed up to an acceptable surface, with very little skier traffic to...
