Re: Transporting Skis

I ended up getting a brand-new Thule Pulse Alpine box that was being sold (used, but never used) on Craigslist for $300. It probably isn't as sturdy as some of the older boxes, but it is extremely easy to put on the car and take off. I really only need a cargo box for the 2 annual weekend ski trips ...

Re: Transporting Skis

Does anyone know any significant differences between the Yakima Skybox 12 ($499 new) and the Yakima RocketBox Pro 11 ($429 new)? The latter, besides having a stupider name, is slightly smaller, 89 inches long (so: can fit 210 cm skis but 215), 1 less cubic foot, 3 pounds lighter.

Re: Transporting Skis

I use an Yakima Skybox. Thank you for the extremely fast reply. I see that the Skybox comes in 5 sizes. The smallest size, the Skybox 12 (12 cubic feet), is probably the best size for me: long enough (92 inches = 234 cm) for skis, but only 24 inches wide, and a reasonable 41 pounds. Since you use y...

Re: Transporting Skis

I just got a new car that came with (in addition to various other optional "accessories" that seem to have no use) cross bars on the roof. And so naturally now I am intrigued with the idea of getting a ski rack and or cargo box. There does seem to be a consensus that a ski rack is asking for trouble...

Re: VT - Stowe - 2018-2019

Are skis with metal edges something worth adding To answer that, you have to estimate how many days a year it would be worth skiing with metal edges. Which means estimating the amount of time when the trails are somewhat icy, but not totally iced over. If the surface is really like an ice cube, you...

Skied at Trapps again. All trails open, and definitely skiable, but not as good as a week ago. I'd call it fair to good at lower elevations and good at higher elevations. I did not feel the necessity of using metal edges, but I think I would have enjoyed skiing with metal edges.

Trapp race course: 8 Mar 2019

Today was an unusual day for me: it was the first day this season I skied at Trapp's but did not ski up to the cabin. Instead, I skied the 5K race course, after the conclusion of the nordic races for the NCAA college ski championships which are being held in Stowe this week. The typical, most direct...

Re: VT - Stowe - 2018-2019

Our younger one loves XC but I suspect it's mainly because she can now go faster than her parents and gets hot chocolate at the cabin atop von Trapp. Speaking as someone who probably cannot go faster than her parents, I'd say that the cabin, alone, is enough of a reason to love XC. on the way back ...

March in New England can be, well, inconsistent, but your best bet is with a place like Craftsbury (or Stowe, or Jay Peak, both of which are within easy driving distance of Craftsbury).

19 Feb 2019 - small new trail

Yesterday and today I skied at Trapp's. It's been a few weeks, so I was surprised at how good the conditions were, I guess I'd call them "very good." All trails open. Today I skied the whole Haul Road, including the Chute, for the first time this season. Whee! There is a short new trail this season,...

Re: Peter Lougheed park (Alberta)

trails are free. Is this more common in Canada than USA would you say? I don't know - this is only my second time skiing in Canada west of Quebec. But, my guess is that it is not especially common either in Canada or in the USA. What I think I detect as a difference is that, in Canada, cross-countr...

Peter Lougheed park (Alberta)

This past week I skied in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Alberta. Conditions were generally good to very good. Peter Lougheed (pronounced LAW-heed) park, in the Kananaskis valley, is convenient to Calgary, and is an economical (free groomed trails) alternative to better-known ski areas such as Ca...

20 Jan 2019

Today I skied at Stowe Mountain Resort (formerly, and still, known as "Mansfield"), Trapp's, and a small section of the Stowe Recreation Path ("Rec Path"). Conditions were good for backcountry skiing, due to the snowstorm that started late last night and continued through the afternoon today, droppi...
