Re: Would-be Olympic skier from Tonga

I think that skiers should have to go through qualifications for the Olympics. This is basically true. It isn't as though someone can just show up at the Olympics as the best (or only) skier from their country. There is a skier, Tucker Murphy, who has competed on behalf of Bermuda. I believe that h...

17 Jan 2018 - Trapp's

A slight little bit more snow.
Still some ice on lower Owl's Howl, and a big ice patch at the junction of Luce and Telemark.

Otherwise, good conditions on (among others): Hare Line, Chris's Run, Russel Knoll, Telemark, Fox Track, and (with a few anomalies, well marked by traffic cones) Morrison.

16 Jan 2018 - Trapp's and Rec path

After rain on Friday, there has been just barely enough new snow for good conditions in most places. Skied at Trapp's this afternoon, conditions generally good, except for a few icy spots on lower Owl's Howl. Skied part of the Rec Path this evening - semi-monthly evening tour sponsored by the Stowe ...

Would-be Olympic skier from Tonga

The U.S. public radio sports show "Only a Game" has a story this week about a man from the Polynesian nation of Tonga who is trying to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics: http://www.wbur.org/onlyagame/2018/01/12/pita-taufatofua-tonga-winter-olympics This is based mostly on a recent artic...

Re: Boutique CAD ski companies?

On the other side of the ledger, it could be that it is more attractive to be a boutique producer in bicycles than in skis because the consumer price of a boutique bicycle is approximately 10 times as much as of a good pair of skis. However, to evaluate this side of things, it would be useful to kno...

Re: Boutique CAD ski companies?

It seems like short run boutique CAD companies helped revolutionize the biking industry. Is there any potential for something like this in skiing? Where a small company could go to a large ski maker and order small batches of skis to their own specifications online at cheap unit prices which they t...

older Fischer waxable skis, Weston MA

Weston Ski Track has a few pairs of Fischer Country (waxable) skis for $20. Also (even fewer) Fischer Sport Glass for $40. And, for extra fun, an assortment of off-brand waxless skis for $5-10. Lacking rock skis, I decided to throw $5 at a pair of waxless skis, made in Finland, labelled "Erik&q...

As for Skimo

There hasn't been much discussion in XCSkiForum about "Skimo", but I noticed that, in Vermont, the Catamount Trail Association is sponsoring a series of Skimo races.

This led me to wonder (and here is the part that is Off Topic) whether Spanish speakers pronounce it "Eskimo".

Full of errors!

We should demand they refund all royalties until they get their house in order!

Trapp's - 26 Dec 2017

Conditions today were very good. The amount of snow today was less than predicted/hoped, but was still enough to make a tremendous difference.

Temperatures are predicted to remain far below freezing for the next 7 days, so there is no imminent risk of ice formation.

Merry Christmas

I have just discovered an error in the song "Deck the Halls."
The erroneous lyric is: "fa la la, la la la, la la la."
The correct lyric is: "mi fa sol, la ti do, ti la sol."

You're welcome.

Re: What made you start XC skiing?

And also the (frozen and snow-covered) Charles River, where I nearly got into a fistfight with a skier who complained that I - then a pedestrian - was ruining the ski tracks on what I reminded him was "a public river, not a ski area." Wasn't the river wide enough for both a couple of ski ...

Trapp's - 24 Dec 2017

After yesterday's mixed precipitation, today's conditions were fair to good. The grooming was excellent as of this morning, but, by late afternoon, the steeper trails had been scraped down to ice. Hopefully, the snow tomorrow (Christmas) will ameliorate that.

Re: What made you start XC skiing?

I did not have any exposure to snow sports (other than sledding down a hill) when I was growing up, or even in college. While I was in college, however, the Boston area was hit by a then-record-setting blizzard. During the weeklong state of emergency that ensued, a travel ban reserved the public str...

16 Dec 2017 - Trapp's

Yesterday I skied at Trapp's. Conditions were generally good to very good, although there were a few places with ice under the snow. Not all trails were tracked. Yesterday morning their Web site reported that almost all the trails were open; today they are reporting 100% open, as is the adjacent SMR...
