Re: Transporting Skis

Lew, you didn’t mention your car. A car with a rear hatch (like an Outback) may have an issue with a box depending on size. So the old style Thule (long) box won’t let the rear gate open fully, but a 10 year old Thule (forget the name) that is barely long enough for classic skis and shoved all the ...

Re: Transporting Skis

Sometimes a 3 mile trip to the trailhead will be fine with the skis on the roof exposed to the weather. Other times road salt and gravel will be all over the road and vehicles in front will kick that up onto your skis. If I had $600+ skis with $100+ bindings I would not subject those skis to the vag...

Re: Reducing camber

My skis have binding plates. Rather than attempt to reduce the camber I move the binding forward one or two notches. Can you try this on your skis?

Re: Fischer Twin Skin at 2019 Birki

I do not own a pair of Twin Skins but while standing in line to pick up my race packet for the Rendezvous Race in West Yellowstone last week I talked to a guy who used them at the Birkie the previous week. He had New Moon do a high fluoro glide wax job on them. He was very satisfied with how well th...

Re: Boot loose in/on binding.

...It definitely has play on one of the boots, not skis as they both do it on the one boot. I wonder if I've done it by wrenching on it when I fall over... Something like this happened to me some years ago with a Salomon Pilot skate boot. I took a nasty fall while trying to do Telemark turns down a...

Re: Boot loose in/on binding.

Not sure about any"play" between boot and binding. But quite a few skiers new to skating recover the leg that they pushed off with by flexing their leg at the knee to get the ski off the snow. This causes the ski tip to hit the snow. The need to flex at the knee is usually caused by not transferring...

Re: Vauhti Quick Glides

Now that you’ve had the Vauhti liquid glides a while, how are they performing? I recently moved to an apartment and don’t have access to a wax bench like I used to. I’m thinking of adding some liquid glides to my wax box. I still use them and find them very good. Others may have differing opinions....

Re: Best easy glide for zero deg F ???

I've used it continuously for two years and found it very acceptable. Do you have a sense of how long an application lasts? 30K, 50K, 70K? I've been intrigued by simple waxes but haven't used much since my tube of Toko paste wax ran out several years ago. The Toko paste was pretty good but didn't l...

Sorry, I have used Start Green in maybe 20+ years. I used Toko glide waxes before switching to Vauhti.

Re: Best easy glide for zero deg F ???

I really question if that stuff would hold up for skate ski's doing any kind of distance Montana. You are welcome to question the value of the wax. I've used it continuously for two years and found it very acceptable. The original post ask about waxing for casual folks. This wax definitely fits the...

Re: Best easy glide for zero deg F ???

The way casual person should use something like the Vauhti Quick Glide liquid waxes. No ironing or scraping. Apply and brush. I haven't touched a hot iron to my skis in two years. There are also non fluoro versions for places like high school meets where fluorinated waxes are banned. https://cdn.sho...

Re: Cold winter this time?

Montana on the east side of the Continental Divide (Glacier NP and south) snow is very thin. None on the plains and mountain snows thin as well. A little more on the west side but valley snow is also thin. West Yellowstone is good but not especially deep yet. Up until Christmas it's been fairly warm...

...what is a better strategy for using a slightly longer of shorter pole for classic in this case 145 vs 140 length. I fit right about in the middle with my height for the length.... Most good ski shops have in stock pole shafts with a basket but the handle is not attached. This allows them to fit ...

Re: Too old to start skating?

Sorry I missed seeing this. Homestake Lodge is the name of the area. It's about half an hour from Butte, going eastward on I90. I've been there in the summer - they rent the lodge for weddings - and the terrain looks really promising, but haven't had a free day to break loose and try their t...
