Re: Too Cold to Ski?

I went out late morning today when it was -15F. There were 10 to 15 mph winds, so wind chills were pretty brutal at 30 to 40 below. It was sunny though and with all black on, it didn’t feel too bad. It was -23F when I woke up and I chose to wait till it warmed up a bit, so I guess my threshold would...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

If only there weren't two more 50+ degree days to go. I like the Sunday idea. Would save the trouble of making a trip up there on Thursday to get ahead of a potential snowstorm only to see the race cancelled due to the storm being a bust.

Re: 2016 Birkie

Definitely have the fever here. Will be #5 for me. I'll be in skate wave 3. I'm no grooming expert but can you groom effectively if temps stay above freezing the night before the race?

Re: Birkie

My race report along with a few extras..... We left from Iowa on Wednesday after work and were able to avoid the snowstorm that hit on Thursday. Same exact thing happened last year. Funny how it hardly snows all winter and when I need to get to the Birkie, it finally snows. The trip up was uneventfu...

I bought my first pair of rollerskis this summer and have gotten to know the asphalt a little too well. As if I don't get stared at enough when I am on rollerskis (they seem to be quite rare in Iowa), a nice wipe-out will really get the locals looking. I figured with five months under my belt, the f...

Yeah, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself in setting a time goal and should be more concerned about finishing. I will be in Wave 9, which from what I gather means poor snow conditions and slow skiers. Thanks for all of the training details. I do a lot of running and have just started doing some interv...

Training plans

I am signed up for my first Birkie and am looking at training plans. I'm thinking I'll use the CXC plan found on the Birkie website, but was wondering about the endurance workouts. It looks like these peak at about 3 hours in early December. Seems a bit early. Also, I'm hoping to finish in the 3.5 t...

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I'm not the most husky person, but I'm also a ways away from 5% body fat. Never would have thought the chest size would have been that important. I'm a little over 40, so I'll just try the large and see what happens. The return policies of the websites I'm looking at s...

Swix apparel

Anybody out here wear Swix apparel? I'm looking at getting a Swix Cruising jacket and pants and am wondering what the fit is like as I will be ordering them online and won't be able to try them on for fit. On the Swix website they have a sizing chart, which makes the product look bigger than normal ...

Thanks for the advice. I think I have the right boot fit. It is snug, but my toes aren't jamming up against the end. I guess I'll have to wait until next winter to find out for sure. I can't wait. As far as the manual vs. automatic, I'm not sure what I have. I bought the NNN R4 NIS skate binding. He...

Ideal fit for a skate boot?

I just ordered my first pair of skate skis and boots. There are various recommendations out there I have found about how a skate boot should fit, but I'm a bit confused as some say they should fit like a running shoe while others say your foot should have a little contact with the boot all around yo...
