Drills?

No, not the kind you use to make holes. I'm talking about ski drills to improve technique. How many of you do them? I like to compare skiing to swimming because the technique is so important; I know tht swimmers do a lot of drills to improve their stroke. In fact, I recently hired a swim coach and h...

Re: Ski marathons across the country

Yea, you're right about New England. I looked up results for the Gold Rush. Not even 100 finishers. There are two popular races in the west: Great Ski Race in Tahoe and the Boulder Mountain Tour in Idaho. Both have around 500 finishers, but aren't technically marathons-they're 30k long. I've conside...

Ski marathons across the country

Check this out: http://xcski.gearwest.com/blog/usa-xc-s ... thons/1150

All concentrated in MN, WI and MI. I was surprised to see how few there were in New England and upstate NY. Thanks to Gear West for providing the graphic.

Re: Old, Old School

Thanks for posting! I'm going to show that to my students on the first day back from break. The risk is that they'll want to make wooden snowboards. It'll be hard to convince them that 51 isn't actually "really old"

Re: Trail fees

Oh wow, how surprising that trail fees in Cali are that high (insert facetious emoticon). They have a whole different currency system down there. Where I ski on Mt. Hood, they can't charge anything. I think because it's US forest land. They do request a ten dollar donation if you aren't a member of ...

Re: Any growth potential for skiing?

If you ask me, the whole point of skiing is getting out there when there is a nice blanket of snow on the ground. It sounds like you want to attract athletes who normally aren't XC skiers but the problem is that you want them to enjoy skiing in poor conditions. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this ...

Re: Astonished at the winter hate in my region...

A lot of athletes are singularly focused. I know runners who will only run. They don't ride bikes, swim, kayak, XC ski, snowshoe, SUP or in line skate. They only run, even with all of the opportunity to do other outdoor sports. If injured, they won't diversify; rather, they just get fat and out of s...

Re: FS: Atomic World Cup Skate Skis

You spelled Milwaukee correctly so I assumed you were from WI. Unfortunately, I can't take time off during the winter so no Birkie (and to rub salt in the wound, it's the same weekend as the Winter Classic). ANYWAY, if it's not too much trouble, can you look into shipping costs? I'm thinking that $2...

Re: FS: Atomic World Cup Skate Skis

Hey, where did you live? This is a tantalizing offer. If shipping costs won't kill me, I'd be quite tempted to,add these to me quiver.

As it says, I live in Portland, OR.

Re: Anyone Skiing Yet?

Don't mean to rub things in but conditions here are literally perfect. Temps in the 20s and feet of dry snow. Rainiest Dec in history in town; translates to lots of snow up on the mountain. Been out twice with my 9 year old. Santa brought him some skis and so far he loves skiing-he won't have to twi...

Getting plenty of snow up on Hood but sadly there is no time to go. Hopefully over the break.

Re: nordic hotspots - where would you move? [USA]

Funny no one mentioned Duluth. I just told someone today that I may retire to the North Shore. Hopefully it's still nice in 20 years. Although my heart is still back in the upper Great Lakes area, another option would be Bend, OR. It's a smallish city about the size of St. Cloud, MN right in Central...

Re: Airlines and Ski Wax

One additional comment: I also flew with waxes and brushes from Portland to MSP. The brass brush really threw the metal detector for a loop, they had to hand search my carry on bag. One thing nice about PDX is that the TSA staff are very cordial, so the experience wasn't something out of behind the ...

Moomba, is the Luce Line Trail in Plymouth paved? I know that it's not paved beyond Long Lake but I think I remember it being paved closer to town. The Gateway trail is more like in the NE part of the cities if I remember correctly. Baker Park is good too, although a little way out of town from Plym...
