Re: Terms when teaching skating...

It's hilarious that our V2 is V1 in other countries. What's really funny is that we've seen a set of widely used terms with "dance" in them in this thread (in Norway: paddle dance, double dance, single dance) and yet you are still suggesting a different dance word that suits your fancy. A...

Re: Training philosophy

"Optimal training" for whom, and to achieve what goals? For top athletes to compete at top level? For amateur athletes to compete? For weekend warriors to live a long and healthy life? Very different, and often with conflicting methodologies. I was going to ask similar questions. And also...

Re: End of our season!

Our season - NY lower Hudson Valley - is about to start over again, with a big snowstorm that probably will mean a week or two of skiing.

Re: Wide ski boots for flat feet

Also what is your experience with insoles in cross country shoes? I think they're pretty important if you have foot or alignment issues. I have flat feet and if I don't correct that a little with good insoles, I get knee pain. I've used custom orthotics and esoles (similar to Superfeet, but heat mo...

Re: Terms when teaching skating...

Hmm, when I think waltz I think "old-fashioned." Just sayin'. And Jeff you haven't explained how waltz is "intuitively obvious to learners," which is a criterion you mentioned earlier. How is it intuitively obvious? EDITED TO ADD the following, from Wikipedia, which makes me laug...

You're right. "Waltz" is so intuitive. Well done.

Re: Climb to the Castle (Rollerski race)

I haven't done that race, but twice raced up that climb as part of a bicycle stage race. Took me about an hour each time, including 2 to 3 miles of similar climbing outside the gate, following 70 miles of racing to the base. There was snow on the sides of the road one time - I think it was May but m...

Where I am, northeastern US, the diagonal skate has also been called "coach's skate." But that's not a standard term.

Re: Terms when teaching skating...

Does anyone when teaching skiing skating have a hard time telling people the name V2alternate? Open field is silly also. I've started telling people that it is the waltz. They will kind of accept V1 but even that is rather lame when you think of it. I might prefer silly skateboarder move names Yes....

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

"The majority of Birkie participants live relatively close." Oh sorry, I was under the impression it was a World Loppet event and had lots of people from all over the place. I knew it was gigantic, but didn't realize it's a mainly a giant local event. Yeah, with local events that don't inv...

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

I don't think they've said the time/day they'll make the call. That's really important to help others plan. Perhaps I've missed that.

Re: Birkebeiner Course Info

Everything is paid for by the Birkie organization, and a lot of aspects of travel. But for people coming from afar, flying to not ski is not good. I've got two friends racing this year - one really wants to ski and race (we don't have many opportunities around here) so he pulled the plug yesterday, ...
