Re: Mora (MN) Vasaloppet

Ben, I love your stories, each of 'em (even if I don't comment). I've been sitting on my ascii trying to get over this cold, and I typed in a year of workouts into Excel. So I have been looking for trends trying to correlate Birkie results to something. The best predictor I found is that afib has a ...

Re: Mora (MN) Vasaloppet

We have Wed 5 km races. It's a skate followed by a classic. As I was standing at the start line for the classic, my HR went up to 150 and said, "Ut-oh, I think I"m in afib," and the race officials looked worried. My HR started dropping and they started the race. No problem with the ra...

Re: Mora (MN) Vasaloppet

Don, I hope you're doing well this week and didn't get sick. I picked up a cold, so I obviously pushed the body hard. I'm not sure why it felt so cold. The official temps were -4F at start time, -4 an hour later and 0F two hours later. There wasn't that much wind, but everyone complained it was cold...

Re: World Cup 2018/2019

First, 14.xx is my 3k time. Second, I enjoyed the video. Third, we now have snow. We've had a few 5-6" systems come through, and the various local golf course have been grooming. I have a cold, but I'll get out there in a few days....I hope. I did a little classic last night and it was fantasti...

Re: Winter season 18/19

Dave, come on to town. We got about 6” so 10” in the last week. Things look white. Birkie trail got it too, so they’re happy. Hopefullly it’ll stay cool for three weeks, and then my cycling season begins with an NC training camp. Really a beer drinking trip with some mt biking.

Re: Winter season 18/19

That's better than my imagination.

After some freezing rain, which has made the roads interesting, we have gotten a couple inches and over the next two days, we're expected to get a couple more inches. We'll see. I'm tired of riding the bike indoors.

Re: Winter season 18/19

I got in two workouts, Fri and Sat, on natural snow. Today, it's 40F (4C) and 100% humidity, so that's the end of the snow. It's weird because the ground is so cold that the melting creates ice. Also, today a local race got switched from natural to artificial snow.

So it goes.

Re: Cold winter this time?

Hey, we got snow, about 4-5 inches (11 cm). So was was enough for grooming, but with the -20F (or lower) after work and wind, I’ve been on the bike trainer. Friday. That’ll be the day to check out a local trail when it’s 90 degrees warmer (F, by wind chill). I didn’t sign up for a big local race thi...

Re: Winter season 18/19

I agree that as you age, there is only so much energy you can devote towards the various exploits life presents. I too thought about racing yesterday. The temps (in Duluth) were around the legal limit, and the winds were gusty, but the race was in the woods. For some reason, it seemed better (and le...

Re: Winter season 18/19

It was quite a storm. I’d say we now have a 1/2 cm in the woods. I made the decision to sweep the sidewalk, although today the sun came out, so the sweeping was just some added arm work.

Re: Winter season 18/19

Another weekend up north, my 5th in a row. It seems like tonight is the first snowfall I've seen this year, but probably not. It looks like a 1/4 inch (1/2 cm), but it was beautiful. I skied classic the last two days since it was cold (below 0F). Yesterday was frustrating since there was pine needle...

Re: Cold winter this time?

Another update. I’m still thinking we may get snow this winter. I’ve been up north every weekend for a while now. The Birkie Trail has snow, but it’s now at a point where I’ll use my rock skis (on the northern sections). There’s too much tree material mulched in with the snow to tell if they’re drag...

Re: Add to my quiver?

Usually it's rare that a skin ski is competitive compared to a waxed ski or simply double poling. A zero ski is also a rare ski to use, but when it's needed it can offer a real advantage, but you might be able to turn your training skis into a zero ski for a day. So I guess you should look at the co...

Re: Cold winter this time?

https://i.postimg.cc/CMXNsWX3/MN-Snow.jpg I'm just into the brown section and we're having record warmth today, so that should take care of the snow. I was just up in the deepest snow section (purple) and they had so much snow they couldn't compress the snow fast enough with grooming. My poles were...

Re: Cold winter this time?

I just got back from the Birkie trail. Surprisingly, it was good skiing. I say surprisingly because they haven't had that much snow, but there was some rain a week ago that froze and provided a good base for the snow that followed. I used training (skate) skis and skied 00 to the Powerlines mainly o...
