Re: Winter season 18/19

It was quite a storm. I’d say we now have a 1/2 cm in the woods. I made the decision to sweep the sidewalk, although today the sun came out, so the sweeping was just some added arm work.

Re: Winter season 18/19

Another weekend up north, my 5th in a row. It seems like tonight is the first snowfall I've seen this year, but probably not. It looks like a 1/4 inch (1/2 cm), but it was beautiful. I skied classic the last two days since it was cold (below 0F). Yesterday was frustrating since there was pine needle...

Re: Cold winter this time?

Another update. I’m still thinking we may get snow this winter. I’ve been up north every weekend for a while now. The Birkie Trail has snow, but it’s now at a point where I’ll use my rock skis (on the northern sections). There’s too much tree material mulched in with the snow to tell if they’re drag...

Re: Add to my quiver?

Usually it's rare that a skin ski is competitive compared to a waxed ski or simply double poling. A zero ski is also a rare ski to use, but when it's needed it can offer a real advantage, but you might be able to turn your training skis into a zero ski for a day. So I guess you should look at the co...

Re: Cold winter this time?

https://i.postimg.cc/CMXNsWX3/MN-Snow.jpg I'm just into the brown section and we're having record warmth today, so that should take care of the snow. I was just up in the deepest snow section (purple) and they had so much snow they couldn't compress the snow fast enough with grooming. My poles were...

Re: Cold winter this time?

I just got back from the Birkie trail. Surprisingly, it was good skiing. I say surprisingly because they haven't had that much snow, but there was some rain a week ago that froze and provided a good base for the snow that followed. I used training (skate) skis and skied 00 to the Powerlines mainly o...

Re: Cold winter this time?

So, another update. We've been waiting for our first snow that's deep enough to groom. There's been some dustings and maybe 2 inches...enough to go tromp around on the golf course for a couple days, but not enough grooming or skiing for a week or two. There's a snow storm coming our way, but it's go...

Re: help -- how does biathlon get a pursuit aspect?

From the racer’s perspective, I get it. When I skied xc pursuits, the racers knew who won the first day and the second day, and even at the awards, they’d often mention that, but only give out awards for the combined. If they award the sprint, they really should award the pursuit separate from the s...

Re: help -- how does biathlon get a pursuit aspect?

Ok, I get it. There’s a sprint winner and a pursuit winner. So if you shoot clean in the sprint, you’ll likely have a good pursuit too.

Re: help -- how does biathlon get a pursuit aspect?

I can't for the life of me understand what's unfair about a pursuit. It's a two day competition, right. XC used to have it too (i.e. two competitions on two days, with one overall result). Golf plays 4 days. You could even point at a 7 game series like baseball or hockey as similar.

Re: Russian doping? -- (try again, on topic)

That's exactly what the FIS/WADA is doing. That's why the athletes are pissed.

Re: Your heritage?

I started bike racing at age 28 (as I remember, maybe I started skiing at 28). I took up skiing as cross training for cycling after a few years of riding through the winter. (Cold as hell some days.) My training partner was also a skier and got me out skating on some 210 classic skis I bought but ne...

Re: Your heritage?

There's no Nordic tradition in my family. I'm the only skier on either side. In fact, I'm the only "athlete" that I'm aware of. My Dad started swimming a mile 3x per week when he was middle age. He didn't look very pretty doing it (he wasn't a natural athlete), so it was quite a workout at...

Not mine, but the guy looked like he had new hockey skates.
