Skiing the North Fork of the S Arkansas River, Salida CO

This trip follows a FSR that is snowy in winter 8 miles one way to a stunning alpine basin at 12000 feet at Billings Lake. It starts at the Angel of Shavano TH between Salida and Monarch Pass on CR 240. Even though it gains nearly 2600 feet it never gets steep and is occasionally groomed after decen...

AMC 100 Mile Wilderness Trails in Moosehead Lake Region

I'm not sure how the XC has been elsewhere in NE but the AMC has been awesome this year. I live only a little over an hour away and have been there 4 times this year. The trails are groomed, but not like a nordic area. They are not tracked and although skating is possible, the trails seem a little n...

AMC Maine Wilderness trails GreenvilleME Moosehead Lake Area

A few small snows finally added up enough to open the AMC Maine Wilderness trails near Moosehead Lake. I skied from the winter lot along the KI road to the brand new Gorham Lodge Trail to the Gorham Chairback Lodge where I had lunch. I returned to the car via the Long Pond Trail rounding out my 15-1...

Re: Which length?

The ski shop didn't experiment. They seemed far more downhill focused than XC. The salesperson seemed very unsure with answers and often would have to look up info. So I'm not sure I'd take the size recommendation as gospel. I saw on a few sites 195 would be more my length. I justed wanted input sin...

Which length?

I'm settled on getting a pair of Glittertind MGV. The guy at the ski shop says I should be in a 200. I am 5'7" 150lbs. I always have at least a light day pack depending on how long I'm skiing. 200 sounds long but I've never skied this type of ski before. Does that sound like the right sizing?

Question about evolution of skis

I've xc skied about ten year and only owned one pair of xc skis. When did backcountry touring skis first show up with metal edges and shape? When did Backcountry touring skies show up for that matter? When did BC NNN bindings come onto the market? I'm just curious.

Eon or BC 70

I'm looking into new skis for first time in a decade. Right now I"m debating between the Rossi BC 70 and Madshus Eon. I don't ski any tracked trails but I do ski on the occasional groomed trail (snowmobile trails) as they are abundant near my house. I also like to explore logging roads and trai...

Advice for a new set up

My current skis are about 10 yrs old and I"m ready to update (one of my bindings has a crack that worries me when I am 2+ hours from a road). I currently live in Maine and ski an Alpina Crosstour no metal edge. Right now I ski a mix of snowmobile trails which are prone to ice if the snow is not...
