Lake Placid, NY 3 XC ski areas

Just got back from Lake Placid. Here are the highlights; Olympic XC facility; I only skied a couple hours the day I got there-, meticulous grooming, which makes for thin snow, but still well covered, 2-3 inch base. The green trails were quite flat and pretty boring. Cascade XC ski: Small xc ski plac...

Re: Converting nowax to wax base

Not quite a conversion- but my oldest skis that I bought new have worn the fish scales to the point that they are much quieter than other fish scale type, and have much better glide. In warm wet snow they have plenty of grip and decent glide (well, not klister good, but who can choose the right klis...

Re: New START liquid grip wax- large temperature range

If anything like the grip tape- very much resistance to wear and scrape. Someone told me it can be applied in the field, but not as good as a clean base.

New START liquid grip wax- large temperature range

Start ski wax has new EASY liquid kick wax with the kind of range the Start Grip tape has. Regular is 41 to 14F, and cold version is 30 to -4F. I like the tape, but it is a pain to clean and apply and gets dirty is less than perfect snow. This looks easy to apply (5 minute dry according to the video...

Review of Nordic Ice Skates

Review of Nordic Ice Skates.txt What to do when we have cold weather but no snow? I finally ordered a pair of nordic skates this year. What are nordic skates you ask? They are skates which; -are only a wooden platform with blade attached -let you clip your XC ski boots onto them -have much longer bl...

Prelim ski done on Olympic tracks?

Watching some olympic video from Sochi and got to wondering- they groom the track and then do they have people ski it in before the competitors? Or do the first guys out have a slower track? How many would ski it in?

How do Skate boots compare to modern ice skates for ankle support?

I tried nordic skates with classic boots and was surprised how weak my ankles were! Are skate boots a whole lot better for ankle support?

Re: Any Help for Raynauld's?

I have about a half case of Raynaulds. I cope with Smartwool glove liners and rather large mittens. Feet get a Smartwool liner sock and fleece 2nd layer. In colder weather a BootGlove also. For me it is as big a problem to keep my hands and feet dry (from lots of perspiration)- I carry spare socks a...

Re: New and in need of advice!

I started skiing 10 years ago- the first few years were completely on 3Pin garage sale skis. I then actually bought a pair of Fischers (got a nice demo day to convince me glide and kick were better). It was only last year that I bought some boots and skis with NNN bindings. I haven't noticed much di...

If you don't really want to ski, a sliding snowshoe might be what you want: http://www.gizmag.com/hive-downhill-snowshoes/21018/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.backpacker.com/gear-zone-gear-review-ll-bean-boreal-sliding-snowshoes/gear/15217" onclick="window.open(this.href)...

Re: Scratched kick zone on my waxless ski

Since the wear is not too high in the kick zone, why worry about it? The kick wax will probably keep it filled (as long as you haven't penetrated to the core). All skis eventually wear, thus making a pair of rock skis, saving a good pair only for plenty of coverage days.
