Re: Long distance racing, is it healthy? (article)

That's how it started for me, probably 15 years ago. I'd ride all summer (maybe 3000 miles) and not race. I'd hit Aug and do intervals once or twice a week, and then in Sep, I'd do a 40 mile mt bike race and kill myself...with cramps starting at about 28 miles. But Jay this sounds like a gradual bu...

Technique: Does V1 have more leg action than Striding?

Are the legs in V1 skating supposed to be more deeply flexing than in classic striding? My impression of V1 skating is that the body mass should be focused over the ski in terms of the force vector if not vertically positioned over the ski. And that the knee should flex and the leg "kicks"...

Technique: Why are skate poles longer?

I'm thinking two reasons. #1: I suppose that dblpoling by itself works good with longer poles than when you have to include singlesticking in the mix. (Why does striding require a shorter pole? Because you're not standing up as high when you plant? Because it doesn't have as much torso compression o...

Re: FORCED striding in classic events?

Should also point out that the sections aren't striding only, they are no double poling . kick doublepoling also not allowed in those zones, right? Yes of course. They just call it no-double poling zones, but there are no other styles than striding anyway. OK that was confusing. There are at least ...

Re: Your best explanation of XC skiing?

So here in Loudoun Co. Virginia we avg. 22 inches per season. Some seasons we'll get 50-70 inches. But since the snow cover is so inconsistent, when we do get snow, none (zero) of the parks have grooming equipment so we're left plowing our own paths with B/C skis. In nearby places across the Blue R...

Re: Your best explanation of XC skiing?

I think XC skiing is foreign to most Americans because what percentage of Americans live in an area when you have 60-days (just 2-months) of consistent snow cover. Probably less than 2%. How many are within 1-hour drive? Maybe 5%. This is why introducing rollerskiing as a gateway to on snow XC skii...

Any new XC trails or XC ski areas?

Anyone know of any new XC trails or XC ski areas that have opened in recent years?

I don't mean just a new connector within a trail system. But a new trail somewhere that didn't have one. Well, maybe if an XC ski area has expanded in a noticeable way, that wd be neat to know.

Re: FORCED striding in classic events?

Vegard Ulvang (skier 85-95) who has worked for FIS for a long time says the double poling 'problem' is practically solved with these measures. ... But there's no way double poling up a hill can ever be faster than striding on waxed skis. To me the easiest best fix is to make the courses harder, mor...

FORCED striding in classic events?

I didn't realize that striding was forced by the new rules in some classic events. Is it just the sprint? There is a striding zone. I thought the special zones were where no skating could be used or where some skate steps could be used around a bend. I thought that DP was being used on entire course...

Re: Carbon boot weight?

Gignoux. ...cool! ...Genau! So they make a skating boot -- stiff sole. I'd probably be OK w a rollerski boot for warmer-temp weather classic ski racing. My old Rossi boots have that minimalist look -- most race boots did back then. low, under ankle bone. no zip-over. I suppose the mesh would be a bi...

Re: Your best explanation of XC skiing?

yeah sculling. ...glide rhythm payoff seems likely behind the "flow feel" of quite a few sports. speed skating ... figure skating too ...rollerskating. we shd be using this universal appeal to sell outdoor sports to everybody. the distinctions b/w the sports shd be specific and w/o bias or...

every other year for Olys? i thought they did that for the events themselves and that they are always a mix in each Oly. ....so that the grand finale 50k is classic on time then skate the next. but overall the Oly events are 50-50 per year. too bad about FIS dropping classic sprints. -- they look go...

Re: Carbon boot weight?

bike shoes are nuts for weight, incl mtbiking. ...i recall one pair 189 grams. they're also nuts for price. it just doesn't matter at the top shelf. but in biking the tech trickles down nicely. ...i can't even find a weight for the Alpina ECK Summer Roller Ski boots. can't find weight. hmmm. (remind...
