Re: What made you start XC skiing?

And also the (frozen and snow-covered) Charles River, where I nearly got into a fistfight with a skier who complained that I - then a pedestrian - was ruining the ski tracks on what I reminded him was "a public river, not a ski area." Wasn't the river wide enough for both a couple of ski ...

Trapp's - 24 Dec 2017

After yesterday's mixed precipitation, today's conditions were fair to good. The grooming was excellent as of this morning, but, by late afternoon, the steeper trails had been scraped down to ice. Hopefully, the snow tomorrow (Christmas) will ameliorate that.

Re: What made you start XC skiing?

I did not have any exposure to snow sports (other than sledding down a hill) when I was growing up, or even in college. While I was in college, however, the Boston area was hit by a then-record-setting blizzard. During the weeklong state of emergency that ensued, a travel ban reserved the public str...

16 Dec 2017 - Trapp's

Yesterday I skied at Trapp's. Conditions were generally good to very good, although there were a few places with ice under the snow. Not all trails were tracked. Yesterday morning their Web site reported that almost all the trails were open; today they are reporting 100% open, as is the adjacent SMR...

15 Dec 2017 - free groomed trails

I decided to start my 2017-2018 ski season on the free groomed trails. The Stowe Nordic club grooms the 5.5-mile Recreation Path as well as a 3 km loop on the Mayo Farm conservation property, and a short connector between the two trails. Both were groomed on Wednesday evening. The grooming held up b...

VT - Stowe - 2017-2018

This topic is for trip reports and other information about the Stowe, Vermont area for the 2017-2018 skiing season. Stowe has 4 commercial groomed cross-country ski areas, the 2 larger ones being the Trapp Family Lodge ("Trapp's) and Stowe Mountain Resort ("SMR" or "Mansfield&quo...

So, 10 km is the metric nordic mile.

His final count was 159 laps for 513 km

What is a "nordic mile"? About 10km?

Re: SD - Anyone ever hear of "Wharf Resources" in northern Black Hills?

Have you done this kind of guiding of the visually impaired before? Yes. I started a topic, in the "General Discussion" forum, about "adaptive" programs, which I''m hoping you can get to using the following link: http://www.xcskiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1781 The Ski For...

Re: SD - Anyone ever hear of "Wharf Resources" in northern Black Hills?

I've abandoned the idea of going to this event in South Dakota, having decided to go instead to a different adaptive ski event (Ski For Light Canada), where there is a real ski area: Sovereign Lake, in British Columbia.

SD - Anyone ever hear of "Wharf Resources" in northern Black Hills?

I am considering going to an adaptive ski event this coming winter in the northern Black Hills region of South Dakota. The lodging will be in the town of Deadwood. The alpine skiing will be at a ski area called Terry Peak in the town of Lead. But I can't quite figure out where the cross-country trai...

Re: Wending my way

Trapp Family Lodge and Craftsbury. Do you have any thoughts on which would be better for a long weekend? (In general, not this year.) Maybe both? And how about Ole's? Stowe - taking into consideration both Trapp's and the adjacent Stowe Mountain Resort (i.e, "Mansfield") cross-country are...

Ides of March

There's always an optimist, in the worst ski season (that would be 2015-2016), who says "all we need is one good snowstorm." Yesterday (and, in fact, continuing into today) was that snowstorm. Today I skied at Trapp's and also down to Mansfield (otherwise known as "Stowe Mountain Reso...

Re: Wending my way

Always great to see another New Englander here!

For people who are not familiar with New England, Wendy is fortunate to be able to get frequently to Jackson and Sugarloaf! Sugarloaf, in particular, is beyond day-trip range from most of New England - but worth the trip.

Trapp's: 20 Feb 2017, 14 Mar 2017

You know how it gets, some ski seasons, you just lose interest in compulsively reporting the conditions every damn time you go out skiing. Well this is one of those ski seasons. Let's see, what did y'all miss (that I can remember): Feb 5-11, Snow Mountain Ranch [Colorado]: unseasonably warm temperat...
