that works well in the Jura here, you can boost in on XC skis on tracks then dump them and use snowshoes into a summit, otherwise it's a slog into some peaks that are really nice on snowshoes.

If you are capable of doing Telemark turns, then metal-edged, somewhat wide, backcountry cross-country skis would work at Mad River Glen and also on the Catamount Trail. good point, I realised I ought to have pointed out it's not easy to tele turn :-) If you're going to be climbing up 2000 feet, th...

I am not sure if they would mind or not. i am sure I can do this somewhere, I just don't know where. I will find out before breaking any rules. I know they do not care during the pre-season. Apparently they do not groom at this particular ski mountain either. good idea, you've nothing to lose by as...

around the jura

Some quick, and not very good, shots around the Jura the last few days. The first couple from the Vallée de La Sagne, the next couple from the Col de La Tourne above the Vallée de La Sagne and the final, very poor, ones from somewhere between the Col du Mollendruz and the Col du Marchairuz doing som...

very true, those photo's are a case in point, both sides of the road at Les Fourgs but the snow's been and gone twice in between them being taken.

I'm away in France in Samoens and La Grave for a while after Xmas then back in February, hopefully the snow will be around by then :-)

Re: Good email-based forum about Vermont skiing (mostly alpi

i definitely do not want to screw up terrain or interfere with anyone's alpine skiing so I would want to either go early before lifts open or find a good uphill route that is out of the way. You'll probably find that the local service guys are out early morning preparing the trails and grooming. Th...

I think what you really meant is

"Huge snowfall in Europe for areas that don't normally see a lot of snow while areas that do normally got a lot of wind and warm air"

but I guess that's a bit long winded :-)

I'll give that a go sometime, I've skied from Les Fourgs via the biathlon course to Métabief as part of the GTJ but I've not been around Mont de l'Herba at all. If you look at Openstreetmap you'll see I've added some of the pistes int he area. They're not on OpenPisteMap yet but they should appear w...

Some more photo's from Les Fourgs yesterday. The snow came just in time for the weekend after some rain destroyed that earlier stuff. They were preparing some tracks just in front of us as we skied them. http://SwissMountainLeader.com/gallery/var/resizes/2010_nordic/2010-12-18-Les-Fourgs/20101218-11...

we pay 120 swiss francs, about $122, for a season card. That covers every nordic ski centre in Switzerland, all the ones on the French side of the border in the Jura mountains and gives 50% off the Haute-Savoie region in France. The standard daily price in Switzerland is 10 CHF or $10 and 35 chf/$35...

sorry! that's a long way from here, it's in the same region of Franche Comté as Les Fourgs but it's maybe 2 hours to drive there. I've never been over there!

Les Fourgs, France

This is in the French region of Franche-Comté in the department of Doubs in the Jura mountains a couple of km from the Swiss border. Technically not actually open today although it was yesterday, today they were calling it "tracées mais non sécurisées" which basically means they've prepare...

I think that's a nice ski, I was just looking at the Fischer s-bounds range myself. Just one thought with length, you say you're doing back country but is that day tours or multi day? I'm more experienced with telemark and AT touring but one factor their for sizing is the weight you're carrying. For...

Les Rasses is in the Swiss Jura in canton Vaud, it's a plateau basically on the main Jura ridge and the snow's pretty good right now. It's only 1100-1200m in height so I'm not sure how long the snow will last here now, snow line is probably around 900-1000m in the Jura right now and there's probably...

An interesting trip to Schwarzenbühl in canton Berne, only 28km from home but I've not been before. Weirdly, I'm not even that familiar with this range of peaks and I thought there was little around there I'd not climbed/skied/hiked http://snowslider.net/gallery/thumbs/lrg-3121-20100312-144153.jpg h...
