Re: Mora Vasalopet

Darn. :( Sorry to hear about the collision Don. Heal up.

It's 13k from the lake to downtown. Trails at the Nordic Center are supposed to be good. If the wind didn't scalp the trail between Knife Lake and the Nordic Center it shouldn't take that much to make it go downtown right?

Re: Easiest area to make the biggest gains in XC?

I know the U of M has a huge club. Gustavus has one, SJU also. All non NCAA.

Really, there are plenty of skiers here.

Re: City Of Lakes Loppet 2013

Nels went out and groomed last night while we were busy drinking beer. Underneath the boughs will need a little bit of shoveling but we're waiting until later. Maybe Wednesday. If we can shovel Wed. it means we're good to go full course.

Re: Easiest area to make the biggest gains in XC?

I can only assume that you speak of your neck of the woods Jeff because I see things a little differently here. Our MYSL enrollment is so large that we have to either cut it off, add days, or add chapters. Some of our highs schools have 120 kids on the team. We don't even have enough k's to accommod...

Re: Easiest area to make the biggest gains in XC?

We do that here too. At various times during the season there are gatherings of friends, like worlds largest skiball tournament, (somebody's)loppet, wafflloppet, bratwurst challenge (two bratwurst= one lap) and lots of state park and state forest trailbreaking skiing.

Re: Cold but no snow... Time for NORDIC SKATE!

So when it's cold but there isn't any snow -- like seems to happen twice a winter in mid-MI -- I lateral over to gliding on ice. Sounds cool. Can you get nice twisty courses with hills and ups and downs through the trees like a cyclo-cross course? I'm sure that'd be really popular. I seem to recall...

Re: Anyone know how sit-skis work?

I actually went sit skiing the other day. Tried to steer it but landed on my side a few times. The top athletes make it look so easy. One time I had one ski in the track and couldn't get the other one in and I couldn't get the one out. I managed to steer though by pushing the front of the ski sidewa...

Re: Easiest area to make the biggest gains in XC?

Every training group from J5 up through Masters does technique almost all the time.

Next is chasing someone faster. This is a case where the game teaches you how to play.

Re: Easiest area to make the biggest gains in XC?

In fast conditions it really helps to be able to stay on the ski. Where you slow down noticeably is when you get off a flat ski, which is normally the propulsion phase. Staying dynamic on the ski and being able to ride it a split second longer is all we're talking about here. It's very subtle, and n...

Re: Easiest area to make the biggest gains in XC?

You guys remember Gene Goldenfeld? He told me once you had to ski the glide. That was his term for being dynamic on the ski, but not just during the propulsion phase. His point was that you had to be dynamic while being on the glide ski as well as making the ski glide by being dynamic. I think.

He's talking about that Swix stuff that comes in the white can. ;)

Even glide wax grips given the correct conditions.

If the times are the only thing showing a trend despite all the other noise then we can only make statements about times trending down.
