Re: Heart troubles and XC skiing?

I had my first ever episode of afib last season after three pretty hard days of skiing. The funny thing is, I felt great all three days. I skated two days and classic skied the other day. Now: it was very cold and I slept in a heated cabin. Dry air. It's possible that I became dehydrated. Also, I sk...

Re: Best secret cures for bad knee?

What JT says about knowing the cause(s) of your knee pain in order to construct a program to address the issue makes sense. The problem is, it's so hard to identify precisely what the issue is, even for doctors. So a scattershot approach is probably better than nothing. I've been communicating with ...

Re: Alpina BC 1550 boots shredding my toes... help!

I'm happy with Rossignol bc x9s. Pretty wide toe box; great support. But I haven't tried other bc boots outside of the store.

Re: Best secret cures for bad knee?

Jeff: you really need to be careful about overdosing on aceteminophrin. Google this topic. So I take the prescribed dosage of two every eight hours. When skiing or backpacking, I take two in the morning just before going out as a sort of prophylactic. Then I'll take two at night. It's hard to say ho...

Re: heart rate monitor

Lew, I don't think that women are going to complain about NOT being called idiopathic.

Re: Best secret cures for bad knee?

I found acetamenophen (sp?) works better that Ibuprofen on arthritis. It really helps my arthritic left ankle when backpacking. And yes, my right knee. So perhaps some of your pain is arthritic.

Re: heart rate monitor

Biff: yeah, my first episode was after skiing three days in very cold weather--dry--and sleeping in a cabin with a gas flame stove. And drinking wine. My doctors called my episode idiopathic--meaning they didn't know the cause--but suggested that I might be dehydrated. They put me on iv fluids right...

Re: heart rate monitor

Thanks everybody for your responses. Absolutely, it's better to get info from a doctor than on-line. On the other hand, since doctors are used to treating less active patients, it's sometimes difficult to get a response that seems appropriate if you're doing things like, well, nordic skiing. So I pu...

Re: Madshus Glittertind (MGV+)

Waxless base. Good grip.

Here in California, temps typically start cold and then go into the 40' s and even 50's . Hard to wax for bc.

Oh and p.s., the Glitterinds have much better stability than my nordic skis in non groomed terrain. They move through/over ruts and snow shoe tracks pretty well!

Re: Madshus Glittertind (MGV+)

I've been able to use my new Madshus Glitterinds four times so far this season. I've been really impressed with their glide! I mounted Magnum bc bindings on them; I'm skiing with Rossignol bc 9's. I've been on pretty easy terrain so far. Good kick; good 'stick' on the uphills; and as I said, good gl...

heart rate monitor

So last year I experienced a first ever episode of atrial fibrillation after skiing pretty hard for three days. Very scary, etc. Anyway, I don't have any known underlying heart issues--they call this 'lone atrial fibrillation'. Also, the doctors can't determine any definite causality. Now I wear a h...

Re: XC Season Begins in Tahoe!!!

Congratulations on your newish-born! I was skiing at Tahoe xc on Friday. One skier that I ran into had her child in a backpack, fast asleep. No need to whisper, nothing was going to wake that kid up. We met again later at the lodge, where the now revived baby was happily meeting and greeting. I admi...

They're skiing at Tahoe

Tahoe xc web cam is showing about four inches of fresh at their base, with a few classic tracks laid down. Partly sunny. It won't last--maybe through tomorrow. But if I lived at Tahoe I'd be skiing today! Just sayin... Oh yeah there's doubtless more snow at Royal Gorge/Auburn (higher, at the Sierra ...

Re: 2014 Sigge's P'ayakentsut - February 22-23

I grew up around Seattle and lived in Bellingham for a couple of years, so I know what you mean about the warmish weather. But hey, I love my Zeros! and 100 km's in beautiful scenery is very nice indeed. Anyway, ski in the morning, right?

Nexski: I'm not a racer but I'd really like to ski in and around this site.

Have you managed to get down to Methow? How does Whistler compare? (sorry, bit of a thread drift here...)
