Re: Describe skis! : ) Fisch, Rossi, Atom, Salo, Pelt, Mad...

^ you just wait. Madshus skis have many positive features but durability is not one of them. The cap and foam structure is easily broken in contact with rocks and other hard objects. ;) Hope you'll have good luck with yours, I have broken two pairs quite recently and while I have only myself to blam...

Re: Salomon Zippers

Still fairly common failure point, especially if you have high profile feet. Salomon warranty does work but takes time - for this many people have had the zippers replaced elsewhere (local cobblers or clothing repairers) for something like 20-30 Euros for pair.

Re: cheapest good carbon poles?

Swix poles are very high quality but fairly expensive compared to others, at least in my area (outside US).

I have poles from 4 different brands and they all are good ones (most are 1-2 levels below flagship poles) but I would not pay full retail for any of them.

Re: Backpack

I have had several Camelbak and similar backpacks for MTB rides and ride year round. The insulated hoses help a little but the hoses seem freeze eventually in cold (-10C and colder), no matter if hose is blown dry or not. My current packs are bit too big to wear under jacket but I have also a Salomo...

Re: Jr. Skis vs. Adult Skis?

There are no skis that are 10cm too tall. Such a small difference in length does not really matter anywhere except maybe while skating steep hills with beginner technique. As for Jr skis some brands do have some which seem like high end but they cost almost as much as adult versions. Hard to say whe...

Re: Dang, Northug busted bigtime...

Well, despite all the problems he has taken 2 golds in the Worlds so far. I'll admit that his "failure" (11th) at skiathlon event was somehow satisfying for me. Sorry  .

Re: Rossi Zymax skate vs Fischer SC skate

The Fischer RSC is existing model, seems to be special model available mostly in European Intersport sports stores. I haven't tried them but pricewise they are about 280€ and RCS are about 560€ RRP.

Personally I think the naming is misleading on purpose and bad choice by Fischer and/or Intersport.

Re: pole and strap recommendation

Ever stand at the trail head and watch someone use the lower part of their very expensive pole shaft to knock the snow out of the sole of their boot? Then they wonder why the pole suddenly explodes one day! It is surprisingly common bad habit everywhere... As for best strap I don't know but most po...

Re: Peltonen Nanogrip ski issues

Wet / warm conditions ski for recreational use, at least first gen models from what I have heard from several sources.

There are already 2nd gen Nanogrips available which are claimed to work for active / enthusiast level but I haven't heard or seen reports about them.

Re: What's happening with Oly snow?

They are using all the tricks to keep tracks skiable - including adding salt to tracks to keep them hard. Unfortunately this makes really difficult to wax as the norwegians have found out.

Re: Threaded machine-screw inserts: mount replaceable bindin

It may be doable but doesn't NNN already enable this?
Salomon bindings rely on glued covers and such which make them poorly suited for this, besides the bindings are fairly cheap compared to skis.

Re: salomon 7 vs 9 classic

Active 9's are really warm boot, for me the only drawback is that they are bit too roomy past the point where lacing ends.
Try before buy.

Re: Upgrade/Modernize Worthwhile?

I think biggest advancements have been made in boots and poles - you can now get nice light & warm boots and stiff poles for reasonable price. This is not without some drawbacks though, the boots are made of synthetic materials which mostly do not conform to your feet and would require new bindi...

Re: Best pole value? (bigger baskets?)

Yeah, no doubt they are using same parts on different brands making guesses difficult. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that surface area is quite same in all designs - the crescent shaped pick in Swix seems like most creative difference (not improvement in my opinion) Those poles with Rex bask...

Re: Best pole value? (bigger baskets?)

From left to right:
- Rex (sorry Jeff no idea on US/CAN availability but this model is for narrower pole tip (8mm?).
- Oneway
- Oneway (older Diamond 980)
- Swix (default basket, there is bigger model with more pronounced tip available).
- Start
