Craftsbury, 17 Dec 2016

Today (actually, after my long nap: yesterday ) I skied at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Conditions were good. About 3 inches of snow fell during the day, so some trails (for example, Sam's Run) had only tracks made by other skiers, whereas others (for example, Ruthie's Run) had machine-set tracks....

VT 2016-2017

This topic is for trip reports and other information about Vermont for the 2016-2017 skiing season.

I already started a separate topic for Stowe, Vermont.

Trapp's - 20 Dec 2016

I skied today at Trapp's. I found the conditions to be fair to poor at lower elevations, and fair to good at higher elevations. Other skiers seemed happier than me. Maybe the conditions were better for skating. Or maybe the conditions were better earlier in the day when there was still something res...

VT - Stowe - 2016-2017

This topic is for trip reports and other information about the Stowe, Vermont area for the 2016-2017 skiing season. Stowe has 4 commercial groomed cross-country ski areas, the 2 larger ones being the Trapp Family Lodge ("Trapp's) and Stowe Mountain Resort ("SMR" or "Mansfield&quo...

Make maps and navigate, in same app

I added more features to the app. Version 2 handles the full life cycle for trail maps: ⋅ Collect data by recording your location from GPS while skiing or hiking ⋅ Clean up data, divide the data into different trails, assign names and colors ⋅ Use the trail map to see w...

Re: Newbie - need some suggestions

Sorry about the delay in replying. (Somehow, I've been doing <stuff other than cross-country skiing> this past week.) I am not sure about this, but my guess is that the main thing about the trails is that they are ungroomed, more so than that they are steep. If this is true, then I don't think that ...

Re: Newbie - need some suggestions

I am not familiar with the areas where you are planning to go skiing.

Can you describe how steep the trails are? That may be helpful in getting guidance on what type of equipment to get.

GPX Track Editor app - make your own trail maps

I have written a track editor that runs on Android tablets. It is now available on the Google Play app store; just search for "GPX Track Editor". I hope this is OK under the forum guidelines. It is a free app, so I am not trying to sell something. The app is useful for all sorts of map-mak...

Conditions today were very elevation dependent. At the higher elevations (e.g., the Cabin trail), conditions were fair to good. At medium elevations (i.e., Parizo), conditions were fair to poor. At lower elevations, conditions were poor or worse.

I have no idea - I don't live there. Maybe there are others, who live in Maine, or who have traveled through there and tried it out.

Maine - cheap hostel-style accommodations near Sugarloaf

There is a new hostel-style lodging in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, about 1/4 mile from the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center (cross-country ski area). It is called the " Adaptive Outdoor Education Center ." The word "adaptive" is the currently popular way to refer to activities for people...

Maine - Sugarloaf

I think this is the first time anyone has posted about the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center (touring center) in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. It's one of the larger and better touring centers in New England, but is relatively unknown, probably because, unless you live in Maine, you probably have closer option...

Ski For Light

Last week I attended the Ski For Light week-long event, held this year at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire, Michigan. Ski For Light ( sfl.org ) is primarily for the benefit of blind/visually-impaired skiers, but they also include, to a small extent, mobility-impaired skiers. They use the terms VIP (...

Re: Osceola, NY

I skied at Osceola Tug Hill for the first time this past Sunday. Conditions were generally fair to good, although I'm sure that has since changed. It's a nice, small-to-medium-sized cross-country area, a Mom-and-Pop kind of place like Windblown in New Hampshire. Definitely worth a trip from Syracuse...

Question about problem with Pilot boots in Profil bindings

I apologize if this question has been asked before. I think it has, but I wasn't paying attention, because I myself am an NNN user. I am asking the question on behalf of a visually impaired skier whom I am guiding this week at the Ski For Light event in Bellaire, Michigan. She recently bought a pack...
