Re: New event in Maine for blind XC skiers

They changed the event to remove the overnight trip to the backcountry hut. The skiing will be only on the Sugarloaf groomed trails. Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation is having a new event for blind/visually-impaired cross-country skiers, February 7-11, 2016. This adds to their current program fo...

12 Jan 2016 - recovering from deluge

Trapp's reopened today after the big rain on Sunday. Conditions poor to fair, with only 3 trails open (Sugar Road, Foxtrack, Telemark), and the "to fair" part came about only with the perhaps a quarter inch of snow in the late afternoon. Still, on the positive side: there is a solid (ice) ...

That was quick - thanks!

Re: MI - Question about XC ski areas in northern Michigan

Hanson Hills in Grayling ... Forbush Corners ... Yes, both these areas are right along the way that I will be traveling, and very easy to find. The road system in Michigan seems simpler than in northern New England. Looking at their Web sites, my first impression is that Forbush Corners is a little...

Unread/new posts should be easier to find [after 2016 update]

After the 2016 update to XCSkiForum, it's hard to find the "Unread posts" and "New posts" features. Eventually I found them on the "Quick links" menu. For me, the "Unread posts" feature is so essential, that I would prefer that it be given its own real estate ...

1 Jan 2016 - different but the same

Jan 1 - temperatures below freezing, stopped drizzling. No more wet snow. Instead, it's a very hard surface - but not wet. So I'd still rate the conditions as "fair". I did make it up to the cabin - and back down - without trouble, thanks to the good work of the groomers, the 1/4" of ...

31 Dec 2015

Visited Trapp's again this morning. A lot more trails open, so you could ski up to the cabin. However, they (appropriately) cautioned skiers that Parizo (the only way down from the cabin) was for "experts only." And, in general, the snow is still wet, from the continuing above-freezing tem...

Free groomed trails in Stowe

Once there is more snow, there should be some free groomed trails in Stowe. The 5 1/2-mile Recreation Path is going to be groomed this year by the Stowe Nordic club, taking over responsibility from an ad hoc group that started Rec Path grooming a couple of years ago. In addition, the Stowe Nordic cl...

Opening Day

Just in time so that the "2015-2016" season includes 2015, a modest snowstorm came yesterday with about 5 inches of snow. Both Trapp's and SMR/Mansfield opened today. Mansfield had more trails open, but, because I only have a season pass this year for Trapp's, that's where I went. Conditio...

MI - Question about XC ski areas in northern Michigan

About a month from now I'm going to upper lower Michigan, to attend the Ski For Light festival at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire. But I'll have a few extra hours, when driving up from Flint to Bellaire, and I was wondering whether there were any other good cross-country ski areas on the way that m...

New event in Maine for blind XC skiers

Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation is having a new event for blind/visually-impaired cross-country skiers, February 7-11, 2016. This adds to their current program for blind alpine skiers, NEVI (New England Visually Impaired) Fest, which they've had for several years. The new "Nordic NEVI Fest...

Catamount Trail Association [Vermont]

I already created a topic about the Catamount Trail in the "NorthEast" board, but it is also relevant to "Backcountry". The Catamount Trail is a 300-mile backcountry cross-country ski trail in Vermont that extends the length of the state from north to south. It is the longest suc...

Re: Comparing BC bindings: SNS or NNN?

There are boots for SNS BC? I would wonder why the binding exists if there are no boots for it! The XAdventure series fit that binding, although that line of skis, boots and bindings appear to be on the chopping block for Salomon as it's such a small part of their business. Now is the time ...
