Heart Rate Monitor

Postby Burgesse » Fri Jul 07, 2017 6:11 am

Recently my Garmin chest strap and Fenix 2 showed lots of spikes in heart rate while doing easy runs. I thought the battery in the chest strap was going and bought a Mio Link wrist optical sensor. It returned similar results. Then I tried stopping to take my pulse after the spikes and, wow, heart rate very irregular. Turns out it's mostly benign PAC - premature atrial contractions.

Question is how to continue to use heart rate for training when the Garmin watch can't handle the irregular report from the monitor. Has any one else dealt with this problem? I can continue to just ignore the erroneous spikes but it's a nuisance to see prolonged harder effort showing a heart rate over 200 when I know that's wrong. At my age it really doesn't matter, I know.

Do they use Bluetooth?

For the Mio Link the connection to Garmin watch is via ANT, and to iPhone via Bluetooth. I haven't tried the phone.
It would be nice to be able to smooth out the heart rate readings.

Thanks. I see it uses the same microwave frequency as Bluetooth (2.4 GHz). I suspect that might be the cause of, or contributing to, your heart problems: http://www.magdahavas.com/pick-of-the-w ... the-heart/
