Raining really heavy right now. It's supposed to cool off so I'm hoping they can make snow this week. Maybe I can get on snow this weekend.

Quite good snow in Hochfilzen for the Biathlon event where it's not uncommon to see green grass, so it seems Europe got it this winter. At least the start of it.

If we had a trail with snowmaking in northern Virginia we'd be skiing. 19 F (-7 C) this morning!

How hard would it be to cover a 1km loop?

Snowmaking is not very easy or inexpensive. See for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowmaking
But maybe you could initiate something up there in Nordic Virginia.

So how is the snow situation where you live? Was the snow late to arrive this season?

It came and went several times in December and January, but February and March this far have been great with a steadily increasing amount of snow. We now have around 40 cm compact snow.

Well here in Norway it's been a fantastic winter from early skiable snow, to big amounts and relatively stable temperatures which produced top tracks all over. They say it's the best winter for 12 years.

To top it off, the Easter holiday had the most gorgeous weather although the risk of avalanche was high in the mountain with some fatalitis which put a damper on things. The tracks are still skiiable for weeks to come around Oslo.

Hope I'm not pouring salt in the wounds for those who have had a less than ideal winter, but worth summarizing the thread and pointing out there are some positives in this time of climate change. Let's see what next seson brings. Hope it's not 3-4 bad years till next winter like this.

We lost our winter early here in Michigan but then got it back -- but only up north. They've been getting a fresh foot of snow every week for awhile now. Not spring like either, but 15-20degF with wind. Kind of crazy! I've gone up a couple times to the newly re-opened Mt. Mancelona and to Nub's Nob to do telemark skiing.

But we did get more skiing downstate this past weekend! We got an inch of ice and glop and it skied great until it started raining on it then it slowed. A friend got in 10 miles on it before the rain. Sometimes rain is fine for skiing -- this time it wasn't. The conditions were comical but they worked!
