Can I imitate pole-crunches with elastic bands?

Postby JeffOYB » Sun Oct 15, 2017 4:31 pm

It seems like there's a recommended exercise for doublepoling which is to just do crunches with the poles but don't do any arm action. Just cradle the poles and work on propelling yourself that way. There's a fair bit of ab crunch and torso compressing in poling so let's train that. It seems fun to do now'n'then. Maybe some folks do it a lot.

Can we readily imitate this in dryland training with elastic bands hung from an overhead tree?

I pull on bands as part of my backyard routine. I use the strongest grade Silver Thera-Band tubing. It feels like good imitation to do doublepoling and singlestick imitation for a couple minutes this way.

I've also included no-arm cradle-crunches in my routine. I back far away to max tension and do some of those. The thing is: they've never felt the slightest bit tiring. It seems like the imitate the snow version but the dryland seems "off" somehow.

Anyone else do this exercise or hear of it? Or problems w it?

Yes, Per Elofsson, Emil Jönsson and Kay Lukowiak show and discuss this technique:

I know it's a decent drill or trick on snow, but what about my training with elastics? Why doesn't it seem like I'm doing work? Like, I don't fatigue when doing it. Yes, the elastic once stretched pulls me back upright but I still have to "drop" down against the tension. So why is there no muscle fatigue? I guess I haven't tried doing it longer than my boredom toleration.
