Better Off Snow Training Aid?

Postby dcpattie » Wed Aug 24, 2016 5:00 pm

Hypothetical question - say one is planning to compete in some upcoming ski marathons (between 30-60K in length). The skiers ambition is to double pole the entire course or as much as possible.

Which product would you recommend for our ambitious skier whom already owns a pair of classic rollerskis. Would you recommend (1) a set of skate rollerskis or (2) Catskis?

I think he already has what he needs: a pair of classic style roller skis.

He already has a set of classic rollerskis and is looking to add another training aid.

But wasn't double poling what he wanted to train? If he, however, wants to become a more complete cross-country skier I think he should get a pair of skate roller skis.

Thanks Magnus - lastly, is it possible to "skate" with classic rollerskis, perhaps just a few minutes (intervals) of skating on classic rollerskis?

Yes, it is, but I do not recommend it. The wheels are not made for it and may get damaged quite quickly together with shafts and forks. There are combi roller skis which are a better choice in that case like Marwe Universal 800 XC http://www.marwestore.com/epages/Marwe.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/30102009-1693/Products/%22Universal%20800%20XC%22/SubProducts/%22Universal%20800%20XC%206S6%22 or Start Combi http://www.startskiwax.com/en/rollerskis/rollerskis/product/1435/combi. However, combi skis are more difficult to classic ski on -- especially since you are tall and probably have a ski boot size that will make the combi roller skis tail-heavy -- so I recommend at least one pair of roller skis for each style.
