Anyone rollerskiing yet?

Postby Neuro » Wed Apr 26, 2017 7:32 am

I guess with the poor winter in most parts you are all out already or what?

The gravel on my river path finally cleared and my foot damage improved so eager to go out 1st May which is the earliest the doctor has allowed me out. Haven't been snow- or rollerskiing for months so super excited to get going.. :-P

Actually not, but I hope to get out on the roads soon. I am preparing the manufacture of a classical wooden roller ski.

Yep -- been getting a couple sessions in a week. But where I live the snow is the anomaly unfortunately. Having said that, I really do enjoy the roller skiing and the workout. Anything I can do that fits into the "out the back door" category is OK by me.

Photos from skiing April 23. 2017.
Today I stayed inside all day doing chores and some indoor weights and stretching as it is in the 30's F and raining all day. From November 19th through April 24 (Monday), I have skied on snow 142 out of 157 days totaling 443 hours. During that same time period, including today, my off snow workouts have consisted of 3 bike rides, 1 run, 1 SUP (on April 15, the day the ice cover finally broke up on my lake), and 3 indoor weight sessions. Since I made the most of our 272" of snowfall this season managing almost 6 months of skiing, I have little interest in roller skiing! Now for 6 months of mountain biking, trail running, paddling, and maybe a few inline skate or sand ski with poles to hold me over until it starts snowing again.

There is no photo, Ken, just a path.

Hey you didn't mention shoveling your driveway. That's a good workout too! Enjoy the spring and summer and congrats on the amount of snow and skiing.

Freezing rain, sleet, and snow made for really good skating in open areas today. Skiing in the trees was tedious and treacherous though. Lots of down trees, power outages, and nasty driving today. Luckily, I only had to drive a few miles to ski today. Still waiting for spring. Yes, shoveling snow can be a great workout but the thing about snow is that it comes on its own schedule, not yours. So being flexible is mandatory if you live out here.

Any particularities with the design? (besides it being wooden)

Yes, they will share the not yet revealed construction concept of my free technique roller ski. But I can disclose that they will be long.

I live on Lac La Belle, an inland lake connected to Lake Superior by canal on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan, US. Photo shows view from my back yard taken at 3PM this afternoon (4-28-17). Today I skied up on the North side of the hill shown in the photo (Mount Bohemia). The other photo is a satellite image of the Keweenaw Peninsula taken on 4-21-17 before the latest snowfall. The white in the photo is the remaining old snow cover from this winter which was the last in the region, and where I have done most of my skiing the past two months.

Great area and it must be so nice to live on the lakeshore like that. Landscape just like here in Norway btw.

Is the snow situation to normal levels?

I would say the snowfall in my local area has been pretty average this season, but now probably a little above the average of 150-250" (381-635cm) depending on elevation. Since I moved to Michigan in 1979, I have been able to ski for 4-7 months a year, the earliest on Sept. 26 and the latest May 26. A typical year sees warmer wet falls with good snow cover starting mid November to early December and lasting until mid April or so. The first photo shows me skiing on Bete Grise (Lake Superior) on 4-21-2014. That year was truly epic for spring skiing, and Lake Superior completely froze over. The second photo shows me on top of Mt. Bohemia on 4-23-2015. The third photo of me on top of Mt. Houghton on 4-14-2016 shows open water on Bete Grise which is more typical. There was very little if any ice cover on Lake Superior this season.

Still skiing this morning from Delaware up Gratiot Mtn. and down to Eagle Harbor. A little dangerous out there today with falling ice from trees. My only regrets today were not wearing a helmet and not using faster skis (better rock skis).
