MI - Downstate - BEST WINTER EVER!

Postby JeffOYB » Mon Feb 17, 2014 7:43 am

Just to let ya know that downstate mid-Michigan in the lower peninsula is having the BEST WINTER in decades. Better even than the snowy decades that sparked off the 1970's ski fever. It's crazy how it just keeps going and just keeps snowing. No thaw yet this season!

Warm-up coming for 3 days this week. Was predicted to have thawing nights, but revised to freezing nights and the warmth much less severe, so it looks like a bullet dodged to be followed by more... winter!

(Who cares about the whiners, but the disabled are indeed having a hard time of it. In general, in mid-MI there is little skiing going on despite the good winter. The entire outdoor winter culture has been dismantled here. A few dozen drive north for weekend racing but very few are skiing locally downstate. No bounceback yet from recent "bad" winters which actually weren't so bad. In the 70's and 80's we'd have 100 cars parked on weekends at a local park. This year, on blue sky, blue wax days we've seen 3 cars at the trailhead. One area shop carries skis. Maybe 4 places groom in downstate region. A "Winter Games" were recently announced -- with no XC.)

Just wondering where are the trails that get groomed regular in your area. Town and resort or trail system in Michigan down state?

One groomed trail in a 150-mi range. It's an hour from us. It's on a golf course, pretty much.

There are 3 others within 2.5 hrs driving. Several more within 3.5 hrs. After 3.5 hrs you have a dozen or so groomed areas.

But we have hundreds of miles of just plain scenic park trails all around. So tour skis are what ya want for ski fun. Ski the singletrack.
