Another epic ski season in the Keweenaw. On May 14th, I skied up the North side to the summit of Mount Bohemia and traversed my way back down through the backcountry. Over 351" (9 meters) of snow up there this season.

I woke up on May 16th to see fresh snow had fallen up on the hill, so I went skiing again up along the Gratiot Lake Road and up and over Buffalo Hills.

I went skiing one more time on Saturday May 17th, 2014. I did a nifty little set of double pole and skate repeats at a hidden little sand pit along the Montreal River. This matches my final ski on snow last season on May 17th, 2013. There are still some pretty big patches of snow left up here, but quality skiing on snow looks to have ended now. Back to back epic snow years, but my on snow hours were down to 508 from 523 last season, which I blame at least partly on the extreme cold weather. (For comparison, I consider 365 hours to be a good or average season for me up here). Now, unfortunately, the potential for El Nino looms for next season.

On Tuesday (3-17-15) I skied the Lac La Belle "triple nipple" to the summits of Mt. Bohemia, Mt. Houghton, and Gratiot Mtn. I used skating skis and conditions included boilerplate ice, solid crust, breakable crust, smooth snowmachine trails, and rutted snowmachine trails. The route involved skiing a combination of alpine trails, Nordic trails, snowmobile trails, and logging roads.

On Wednesday (3-18-15), I skied a repeat of Tuesday's trifecta but starting at lake level and following a different route much of the way.

It's like your own private Catamount Trail

Have you ever considered backcountry skiing in Vermont?

I've never been to Vermont, but I'm sure I would love skiing there. My niece lives in Vermont so maybe I should go visit sometime. I'm fortunate to live where there is usually about 5-6 months of good skiing, 7 months last season, which makes for a short summer once the snow melts. Then mud season followed by bug season and then, hopefully, a few weeks of really nice weather before fall drizzle and rain transitions back into winter.

It's amazing that three hours north of us you have ski-able snow. Jealous for sure.

Yesterday, 4-23-15, I went for a nice 4 hour ski tour, a big loop including up and down Mt. Bohemia and Mt. Houghton. Over 265" of snow here this season.

1-2" of fresh powder heading up the backside of Mt. Bohemia
