top skate skiing destinations in Europe?

Post by misterpracticality » Wed Dec 04, 2013 7:21 am

We just moved from Washington State to near London. In Washington, almost all x-country trails are also skate ski groomed. We almost booked a trip to the Peer Gynt trail in Norway but then found out that the trails near to where we are staying are not skate groomed, only classic.

I have spent a surprising amount of time Googling for the best skate ski destinations in Europe, but have really struck out. (Google thinks "skate skiing" == "cross-country skiing". Bing is no better. Which makes it tough.)

So, to the collective wisdom... where are the top skate ski destinations in Europe? Seefeld, Austria has popped up, but I hope there are many others.

I don't mean somewhere with only one or two dozen kilometers of trails; that takes a day to cover. I am looking for somewhere with many kilometers of trails, properly-groomed. (Yes, we are spoiled - the Methow Valley, in Washington State, has almost 200 kilometers of world-class skating! I am now really starting to realize how special that is.)

Thanks much,

The biggest xc-ski connected area in Europe is the Jura. It's a mountain splitted between France and Switzerland.
All trails are for skating and classic style.
There are about 3000 km ski trail in France and 1500 in Switzerland, about 70 % of these trails are connected. You can ski from south to north in France and come back from noth to south in Switzerland, skiing about 320 km without interuption. GPS track can be obtained here for the trail on the France side: ... -fond.html" onclick=";return false;

The ski trails are listed here for France:" onclick=";return false;

and here fore switzerland ... 0du%20Jura" onclick=";return false;

All detailed maps can be obtained in tourism office or ordered on their website, I think also in english language.

Im not sure about your budget but Switzerland is out of mine. Another option, probably a bit cheaper is Lapland in Finland.

Couple of years ago we stayed on a lake Sarkijarvi near a town called Muonio. Flew from Manchester to Helsinki and a connection to Kittila 150 GBP, self catering cottage to sleep 3-4 was 300 EUR a week, restaurant in the complex too. There were hundreds of km's of groomed track, two classic lanes either side with a skating lane through the middle. Fantastic skiing across frozen lakes with Pallas mountains in the background which look like the moon.

Dug out somebodies blog on the skiing there from google, you can see the track quality in the photos: ... k-lapland/" onclick=";return false;

Hi Chris,
You can check out all the info on France via this link" onclick=";return false; You may have to go to the resorts individual websites for full spec. It seems to be the standard here to offer a skate piste alongside classic tracks.

The French Alps are very accessible from London, though you may have to hunt for reasonably priced accommodation. Might be an idea to hire a car and visit a few different ski stations in one trip. You are spoilt by your US experience!

Have you tried contacting the London Regional club? They should be able to give you tips.

The Sjusjøen area near Lillehammer in Norway supposedly has some of the best trails in Europe, season is from October to May and there's about 2-300 km of skate groomed trails. There is also Trysil, Rena, Ringebu etc nearby with more trails." onclick=";return false;" onclick=";return false;
