A weekend storm that started Friday and dropped close to two feet in the Erzbirge mountains along the German-Czech border by Sunday evening prompted a weekend getaway.
Based in Altenberg, we skiied about 20 km Saturday on both sides of the border (we ended up stranded by darkness in a village about 7 km away from where we were staying and had to hitch hike back) followed by an easier 10 km or so on Sunday.
Trails were groomed at times, not at others. They were almost better when not groomed, actually, because only light equipment was being used and the tracks were very shallow. All in all, the snow was great and it was a perfect start to the season (apart from my aching muscules today).
