Winter driving - fire and ice

Postby LewLasher » Mon Mar 10, 2008 10:10 pm

From the February 21, 2008 Stowe Reporter:

Two cars gutted by flames

Two vehicles burst into flames on busy roads recently in Stowe. No one was hurt, but both vehicles were demolished.

The first fire was Sunday, Feb. 10, at about 1 p.m. on the Harlow Hill portion of Mountain Road. A Mitsubishi with summer tires couldn't make it up the slick hill, fire officials said.

However, the driver kept trying, and Stowe Fire Chief Mark Sgantas said he believes the spinning tires got so hot that they burst into flames, and soon the rest of the car followed.

"Your tires can get so hot, if you're really zinging them, that they can catch on fire," he said.

Traffic came to a halt while firefighters doused the flames. By that time, the car was "twisted metal, and time for a flatbed," Sgantas said.

...

[In the other case, it was a more conventional, engine-based fire.]

How can anyone in the snow belt not know what snow tires or winter tires are? Although it seems like most people don't.

I've seen folks get stuck in the Post Office parking lot ... I mean, C'mon ... the Post Office? Image Also had a delivery driver turn around in my driveway and get stuck. He simply FLOORED the gas. When I helped him get out (all of 2 minutes) he said: "I can't wait to get back home to Georgia!"

Good ..... BYE!! Image

But to give 'er the gas until it goes up in flames??
