I was staying up at Craftsberry Vermont last week and participated in their weekly race on Tuesday. The course was exactly like the discussion started on this string. It was a windy twisty mogul, single track, turns every few feet through the woods,up and down constantly and a real effort to get through for me at least. In the end it was fun and it certainly I was completely gassed at the end. So the course designer for that day must have read this discussion string.

i haven't noticed any PR being done with Jessie and Kikkan's first-ever gold.
also xc and xc racing aren't growing in the us in any reasonable way.
JFT's silly mockery is pointless.
i'm suggesting a mtbike type broad-based democratic counterpoint to the monochromatic roadie type style that comprises XC ski racing at this point.
Jessie has acquired many sponsorship's from her gold medal...visit her instagram page...
Kikkan got cancer and retired so naturally you are going to hear less from her. That being said she has been really active in the ski community and was recently at the American Birkebeiner.
Jessie Diggins was also in last summers ESPN body issue and did a great interview about it, and has done a lot to promote the sport!
I've just read about Kikkan's fight with Cancer in SkiTrax magazine.

I've been told that Norwegian fans throw hot dogs at ski racers. It's expected!
