Submitted by on Tue, 01/24/2012 - 19:54
The Norwegian based Team United Bakeries signs up Petter Northug for the Ski Classics 2012 season. Petter Northug who is one of the best World Cup skiers in the world will do his first start in a Ski Classics race with Marcialonga on Sunday. Several articles has been written about his chances against the best long distance skiers in the world. We allready know that he's the best sprinter in a World Cup distance race, but will he have the same speed after 3h of racing? On Sunday we will know!
More information about Team United Bakeries.
More information about Marcialonga.

Oi.

Bury him early. If he's anywhere in the lead group during the final K's, the race is his.

It's a year too late to burn him early. Did you see his 30k in Davos?
A slim chance to burn him out exists theoretically, if he has no-one to sit behind. This is be best ski sucker on his time. He'll find someone to suck behind, or just decide the rest are going too slowly for him.

Respect to those racing those longer marathons, but really a 50k super champ doesn't need to give up much speed to go 20-30k longer.
Just like Usain Bolt, WR holder over 100m and 200m, cannot be beat over 300m. That much speed reserve. In endurance, the effect of inceased distance is in fact actually less than in sprints.

No, I live in the USA. We don't get to watch skiing here.

Biff, get serious with torrent downlods if you're not already. No reason to miss any WC action.

Here's the Marcialonga finish.

I've been fortunate to be able to watch both of the 2012 Ski Classics in their entirety on SportsNet One here in Ontario (Bell XpressVu). So-so commentary, but the race/coverage was exemplary. It looks like they're broadcasting the Vasaloppet, too. :D

The last three K's are all uphill...this after 67K of double poling. Of course there is an aid station there that offered little shots of expresso when I did this event. Tasted great but I still bonked.
