Minnesota Finlandia 2013

Postby SpecialGreen » Fri Feb 15, 2013 11:18 pm

weather.com says 2F at 10am rising to 11F by noon; accuweather says 10F rising to 15F.
Folks may need to tweak a bit at the start.

No tweaking for this old guy. It was 21 below here when I left and 6 above at the race site when I arrived. I had 2 pair waxed w/ Start Green plus the SkiGo C380 and that was that. It was cold but not too cold (for me, anyway).
My time for the 25K skate was a lot slower than last year but a bit better than a few years ago when it was also quite chilly. Can't tell yet how the winning times compare. I was happy I chose the somewhat heavier , old, 195 Madshus bc the back 1/2 - as always - was deep loose snow on every hill and those soft Madshus' are nicer in those conditions. I was crawling, but crawling on top.... :?

I did my first Finlandia today - the 25km pursuit. Wow is that a hilly trail! That combined with the slow snow made for a painful race for me. The first 9km went OK then the top woman (and overall winner) blew past me, shortly followed by the winning man. I held on after that thankfully, but I was miserable. I need to start lifting weights to climb those hills faster. :)

With age should come wisdom but NOT in my case. I was not in good shape and I still signed up for the 50K. I had what I thought were well prepared skis and opted for a no warm-up wanting to preserve some energy. My skis were dogs from the get go and it became a slugfest. Multiple times over the last 10k I had to come to a complete stop. Over the last 30k's I saw no one infront or behind me. My time was 30 minutes slower than 2 years ago.

Everyone else must have been in the same boat as I won my age group!

I' don't know about the skating, but two years ago was an icy roller-coaster. That was my second race. It was about 2F at the start, if I recall. It seemed like the classic track was either pulverized ice or well-glazed snow. My special green didn't kick too well, but others reported that Grip Tape was great. Like you, Don, I stopped on a couple of the hills near the end ... in the 2011 25k classic, no-less! I don't know of a comparable metro-area course to train on, other than repeating "up & down the ski slope" intervals.

Go to 4 minutes in: notice how Murray Carter DP's to the finish of the 25k classic just 3.5 seconds behind the 25k pursuit winner, Phil Rogers (1:10:42.2 vs. 1:10:38.7). Way to represent, Murray!

For "climbing practice" in the metro you may want to visit either Battle Creek, or Theo Wirth. Both locations are homologated to FIS standards and contain significant amounts of climbing. Theo has snowmaking cabability, Battle Creek, hopefully soon.

Interesting. Watching the skier at 3:15 opening her bindings while snowplowing I thought "Oh, they're going on their ass for sure"
