Check this out: http://xcski.gearwest.com/blog/usa-xc-s ... thons/1150

All concentrated in MN, WI and MI. I was surprised to see how few there were in New England and upstate NY. Thanks to Gear West for providing the graphic.

Interesting.

Depending on how they define "major" it's probably missing some in New England

I'm pretty sure there are major marathons in California, like the Gold Rush.

Yea, you're right about New England.

I looked up results for the Gold Rush. Not even 100 finishers. There are two popular races in the west: Great Ski Race in Tahoe and the Boulder Mountain Tour in Idaho. Both have around 500 finishers, but aren't technically marathons-they're 30k long.

I've considered doing one or both of these but could never justify the travel and expense for such a short race. Kind of ironic: when I lived in MN, there was no shortage of races but often not enough snow to train for them. Out here, there is no lack of snow but only a handful of very small races to train for.

Also in NY there is the Winona Forest tourathon which has a 50 km race distance in it. It is a classic event.http://www.winonaforest.com/tourathon.html
