New doping allegation: 300 XC skiers from many nations (2001-2010)

Postby Neuro » Thu Feb 08, 2018 5:38 am

Swedish TV, The Sunday Times and Swiss magazine Republik together with famed German journalist Hajo Seppelt (who started the ball rolling with the Russian doping case), have obtained 10 000 tests from almost 2000 World Cup XC skiers from between 2001 and 2010, many of them World Championship and Olympic medalists.

The samples were compared to athlete's average blood values from their 'blood passports' which were introduced in 2009, and there were anomalies with 300 skiers that is claimed could only have happened with doping.

Athlete nationality varies from Sweden, Norway, USA, Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, Estonia, Czechia.

It is said that as much as 40 percent of medalists during that period have likely been doped which seems almost incredible.

The timing of this.. The same week as Olympic start?

If this is to believed, XC is as bad as cycling.. :?

it's a big deal. i thot xc was always known to be as bad as biking. i suppose it's a lot less money so that makes it more surprising but perhaps it's more taxing on the body. ? hard to imagine xc ski compares to the stress of the Grand Tours but there ya go. i'm thinking that doping is common in all sport. every athlete gives 110% and over-stresses the body and desperately needs better recovery and more power, etc. so the drugs are there.

it seems like big money might come in once a sport has a lot of testing because then the cheaters need organizational help w countertesting and depletion studies.

in sports w/o testing the cost is just the drugs. ...which are probably quite pricey. so these wd be sports done by ppl w spare cash. the free time to train for sport already implies middle/upper-middle and white-collar. ppl who aren't already using up their bodies in their jobs.

But again, just as with the Russian case, there is little if no verifiable evidence as yet.

And what's also same, there is not much reaction from the sporting bodies about it, just shrugging, although this is very recent.

The immediate response from the Norwegian XC heads is that some people have naturally high values, meaning they either didn't understand the accusations at all or pretending so.
