Forgive a brief interruption in the Neuner jaw-drop thread ...

Kaisa MÄKÄRÄINEN of Finland is shooting 100% so far, 40 for 40, at the World Championships. Silver yesterday and Gold today.

Now back to admiring Lena. I really thought she would come back from the two penalties on the last leg to make it a sprint for Gold today.

I am feeling odd about Finland's performances both in XC and Biathlon this week. Not sure what to think. It comes across inconsistent.

Nothing unusual, lots of trouble with ski and wax choices for some athletes on certain brand of skis... Just like the Swedes who had bad skis in some events and fantastic in others.

Athletes on Peltonen skis did not have good skis for some days (especially at mens 4x10k) on Holmenkollen, but at same time Ville Nousiainen insisted that this was anomaly and his skis have been as good as anyones on the other World cup races.

I might need to clarify the previous post, did not mean that waxing problems were limited to this brand.

How to sell alcohol free beer to Germans? Well, like this:

Nooooooooo !

""I will finish my career as biathlete after the winter." I made a decision that is right and considered very well for me personally, and I'm glad that I finally honestly can pronounce that, what I think. On the one hand I yearn for normalcy, after a little more peace and then, just to be able to do the things I could never do in my sporting life; "on the other hand I'm very motivated to try new things, have tested much and certainly also skills in other areas." And now let us be not sad but enjoy the rest of the season, okay? :-) (Translated by Bing) "

There were rumors based interviews where it was emphasized too much for her comfort.

I wonder what her real reasons are. Often I suspect fairplay issues, and it might just be that.
Motivation? She's performing better than any season start, due to skipping the usual illness gotten from hanging out up North for too long before the season openers.

She does seem too modest a girl to be a superstar. And far too bright and well-supported.
Think of a Michael Jackson. Talented beyond all precedent at what he did, and blessed with a heart that just gives, and gives. Stardom was not good for him.
Neuner could easily become the female Bjoern Daelie. Start het own sport clothing brand. Her personal modest style would make it rule among the nordic cruiser folk I imagine.

It must strain such a girl, to be away from home as much, be stuck to team scheduling, let alone race calendars.
Suppose she has a special someone who doesn't care much for skiing, and she can't see him all winter. That'll make her rethink her priorities.
She gets love from people even if she does carry skis, she doesn't need to ski to please people. At least she hopes.
From her words you sense how she feel the responsibility towards her fans. They like her for who she is, but it started with biathlon that introduced us to her. Her crazy ski speed and almost passive level of shooting at times... That almost chubby look, taking on super skinny elite athletes, and beating them on most occasions.

I hope to know the full reason some day. And she won't feel uncomfortable to try a comeback, due to the expectations it would surely bring. It's hard to come back after such a storm of a career.

In a way I can see. She's been World Champ and Olympic Champ. Had opportunities to grow outside of the sport, because of the success. Why WOULD she continue? Nothing to prove. Carreer of legends. Legends are to envy her resume and image.
She can do whatever she wants. Why would it be biathlon once more?

Sad for us, but this is about her!
